The Italian line, Costa Cruises recently announced that it is saving surplus food and offering it to organizations that provide food assistance to children & refugees. Great idea!

They need it, I think! 
The problem with donating food is that if any of it is bad, it could open the line up to litigation.
Hopefully that will not happen in this case.
The waste issue was the demise of the old Grand Midnight Buffet with all the ice and food sculptures.
I Can remembering waiting in line to go photograph the buffet before they would allow you to eat it. more people took photo's then ate it. I have photo's from the 90's Midnight Buffet but no scanner 
.
I wonder if other lines will follow this example and deliver food to places in the Caribbean or even in their home ports where families could use it.

Day 1 - Ship cooks 36 Dutch Oven Baked Turkeys. Carved tableside - VERY Nice!
Day 2 - Turkey and Gravy - Yum! I will have some.
Day 3 - Turkey sliced for the meat and cheese tray. OK some turkey, roast beef, swiss
Day 4 - Turkey Soup - Ummm - Maybe I will try the Boston Bean soup.
Day 5 - Cooks day off
Day 6 - Where is that food donation pamphlet?
Day 7 - In port. Donate Eight Freshly Roasted Dutch Turkeys
Day 8 - Turkey - GREAT!! Uh - is it supposed to have a green tint? Did I miss St Patrick's Day?

I hate to think that until now, these ships were tossing all the surplus food.
Sounds like a great plan, extra work for the cruise line but extra good will and tax deductions.
Interesting... Might be good publicity.
