Seasonal History Lesson

In early 1912, Mexico was suffering from a sever mayonnaise shortage. As it was a staple ingredient in almost all their dishes, they were nearing panic due to the lack of mayonnaise.

President Francisco Madero was able to locate 500 tons of mayonnaise in England, costing just pennies on the peso. He arranged for it to be loaded on the HMS Titanic for a scheduled to delivery on the fifth of May.

Unfortunately, The HMS Titanic struck an iceberg on the 14th of April, sending all 500 tons of mayonnaise to the bottom of the Atlantic.

This completely depressed the Mexican populace since they would have no mayonnaise. However, in true Mexican fashion, they created a holiday to mourn this national catastrophe, which they still celebrate to this day.

They call it "Sinko de Mayo".

And now you know the rest of the story.

Do you stay up late to come up with these?

Sheeshhhh.

More groaning---S.S.Titanic is also correct. So is RMS Titanic as well as RMS SS Titanic. In Lord Mersey's, Wreck Commissioner for the British Board of Trade, formal report on the Titanic loss the ship is always referred to as the S. S. Titanic. S.S. = Steam Ship. What I have always been curious about though, is the correctness or not of using HMS for the RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania. As many recall, Cunard couldn't build those vessels without government assistance. Since the British were extremely upset over J.P.Morgan's International Mercantile Marine taking over ownership of the British White Star Line they were inclined to help Cunard out however possible. So they floated a 2.6 million pound, twenty year, loan for the two vessels. One expensive stipulation though was that both had to be readily adaptable for service as auxiliary cruisers when needed. That is why both were listed as war ships and one of the reasons Germany had every right to sink the Lusitania off the "Old Head of Kinsale" in May 1915.

A rather LUKE warm pun, there!Yummy

I'll just sit here with my CHEWBACCA, spitting on the porch, dreaming of me ANAKIN sitting on the beach in Hawaii wearing a LEIA

Tomorrow is National Star Wars Day. May the Fourth, be with you.

RMS. Not HMS.

HMS is reserved for military ships

RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship / Steamer. Since the Titanic was a passenger ship, she also hauled mail.

sorry about the nit picking, but it is a history lesson.

thanks for the groan though
