Saving Money / wasting money on a cruise

Hi ,

I just read a article on how to save money on a cruise & ways that cruises waste your money. Here are some points that were relevant to me. I'd love to hear your points of view.

1. not buying a drink with out a beverage package is a waste of money. My thoughts are there is no way I can personally drink 70$ a day in drinks.

2. WiFi it says that you can save money buying the WiFi package. My thoughts are at 70$ a day it's not wort it to me .

3.Getting exercions thru the cruise line is a waste of money. My thoughts are that if I try to find exertions on my own are they going to make sure I get back in time? As a side note on this point it was also stated that being on a cruise with limited time at ports.

I know everyone situation is different & finances are different. What are your thoughts?

Drink packages - Not doing it anymore. I pay less buying the drinks individually.

WiFi- No thanks. I disconnect when I'm on a cruise.

Excursions through the cruise line - Depends, lots of variables there.

We don’t even buy the soda package - would never drink that much in even juices or sodas.

No wi if for us on a cruise. I will check messages if there’s free wifi in a port, but it’s not mandatory.

Booking excursions - generally we use the cruiseline’s excursions for the guarantee, but we also went with ShoreFox, booked through this site and they also have the guarantee to get guests back to the ship. ShoreFox had an excursion to Orient Beach plus MaHo Beach I St. Maarten that we wanted, and our Cruiseline didn’t offer it. I’d definitely book with them again.

I pretty much agree with all of you.

The drink package can be worth it if you drink enough. If not, you are wasting money.

As far as wifi, I have a hard time paying $50 per month at home -- no way am I paying the charges on board.

And considering the excursions, the ship's guarantee isn't bad considering the unplanned delays (such as traffic) that may delay you in returning to the ship. Although I am not against taking an excursion from an outside vendor if the price and itinerary is what I am looking for.

All in all - is the package (booze, wifi or excursion) a deal for you? Is it what you are looking for?

We found the drink package not cost effective for us. We drank more but the cruise line(s) definitely made money on us (tried it on Princess and Carnival). So now that the price has increased on Carnival, we would lose more.

WIFI: like BonMike, we may check at some of the ports of call, but we don't bother buying it.

Shore excursions: we might buy one off the ship if we are certain we can get back in time. Usually, we buy on the ship for the peace of mind. The ship knows where I am and will wait. Plus it saves time on the research.

Happy sailing!

I was thinking the same thing. I'm so glad I'm not alone in my thinking.

There are many other ways to save as well but it is a matter of preferences and choices. You can avoid the casino and specialty dining or maybe those are things you love about a cruise. Buying pictures from the cruise can also add up but to some it is a must. It is much like anything you do in life. Thinking first before spending.

Agreed. The thing with shore excursions is this it depends on your comfort level and what you are willing to do. Ship excursions the ship will wait for you. We have booked numerous excursions not through the ship. We recently used Shorefox through and couldn’t have been happier. So far we have done well. However, we are very careful and do a lot of research.

Very true.

For ship based Excursions besides the ship waiting for you if late return (a flat tier, traffic or storm), if bad weather causes a change in ports the ship will refund your ship based excursions, if you buy from outside vendors, your just out of luck if you do not hit that port. The cruise lines also have quality control over the vendors that the ship uses.

I do not drink enough to booze or soda for a package to be cost effective for me. I tend to mostly drink water. You can save $$ on water buy ordering a case to your cabin before the cruise instead of buying it one at a time.

Wi-Fi as pointed out, every port will have bars or coffee houses with free wi-fi. On vacation I try and unplug.

Another $$ saver is to not use your cell phone on the ship $ 2.50 per min or in port. If you must use it in port get a VOIP or Google # that you can use on Wi-Fi for free.

WOW.! Thanks a lot for the information. I will have to investigate that. =)
