Sailing out of New York

Who has sailed out of New York? How was it getting from the airport to the port? Also any opinions of NCL Gem? Thinking of booking a Canada/New England cruise on Gem in September.

Are you thinking of the 7 or the 10 day cruise ? We have only done 7 days, but my wife's aunt did a 10 day on,.................crap I forget which ship. May have been the QM2. The overnight in Quebec was great she said.

Bar Harbour is a nice town. Portland, Me. is also a nice walk around artsy town. In Halifax, down the boardwalk is a bunch of kiosks. Find the one that sells Beaver Tails ( everyone else knew this was coming ). They are the best thing to come out of Canada since Wayne Gretzky. Walk a little further for Tim Hortons for coffee. Check out Nova Scotia Crystal while you're there ( near Tim Hortons ).

Excursions, well, Peggy's Cove is the the best, but the Bay of Fundy is a close 2nd.

Thanks for the props

Sailed out of NY many, many times. I can't tell you about the ride from the airport because we live 15 min from the pier ( which airport btw ? ) but I will tell you this, if you fly in that morning into either NY airport, unless there is a cruise line shuttle, don't take anything other than a Yellow Cab. These are the only cabs permitted to pick up passengers ( unless you arranged for a car service to meet you ). Other livery cabs operate illegally. There should be a flat rate of about $35-40 to take you into the city.

Now, the Gem. Great ship. We have been on her 5 times. Easy to follow layout. Cruise to Canada is one of our favourites, and September is a good time to go. Great weather, not too many kids. You may or may not be able to use the deck pools, but I recommend the extra cost for the Thermal Suite package ( check the NCL website ). Food in the MDR is excellent. The buffet is very good. If you want extra, pay for Cagneys and / or Le Bistro. Avoid LaCucina. If you want, Teppanyaki is very good, and they prepare everything in front of you. The other Asian restaurant is also very good. The staff has always been very friendly.

Thanks for the info Bubba54.

We have sailed out of New York once, the taxi's have a flat rate to the port. But we had to o ask it wasn't offered. The New England Canada cruise was a beautiful cruise.

BAK1061 is a great source of info on all things about NYC, and he's cruised to Canada a couple of times. I'm sure he'll be able to help.
