I am an ex-smoker, now using an Personal Vaporizor (often mislabeled as an E_Cig).
Whether I agree with them or not, I follow the rules of the cruise lines -- using it only where cigarettes are allowed. I agree with many of the non-smokers that the smell of smoke "leaves much to be desired", however I am relegated to the same areas of the ship as they.
As far as the safety of the PV, it was mentioned above that there is no smoke, no flame, and only discharge in the exhale of the user. You may argue that since the batteries "have a history of melting down" then they must be dangerous. I will agree with you only if you agree to give up all battery using devices (cell phones, tablets, laptops, etc all use the same style battery).
I know for a fact exactly what is in the liquid used in my PV, as I make it myself using three USP approved materials and nicotine. None of the materials are detrimental to your health, except nicotine when used at 5% solution or higher (50mg or higher). I use a 1% solution. And yes, this is from a government study.
As far as "it looks like smoking, therefore it is" is simply preposterous.
And as far as "I do not like the smell, therefore it should be outlawed", then I suggest that we also outlaw all perfumes, aftershaves, and scented soaps. (Something tells me it will still smell)
I will continue to use my PV alongside the cigarette smokers in the designated smoking areas, while you continue to enjoy the non-smoking areas. But seriously, do not suggest that I be banned from cruising.
