How do you feel about cruise lines' smoking restrictions?

Cruise lines all have different policies about restricting where smoking is permitted. Some allow it on balconies; other prohibit it, for example. Some permit it in the casino; others do not. I think that MSC has the least restrictive policy.

What bothers me is that the cruise lines do not enforce whatever their policy is. Are policies too strict or not strict enough? Let's hear from smokers and non-smokers. I am a non-smoker but I realize that smokers have rights also. I'd like cruise lines to use better ventilation systems so that smoke doe not seep out into surrounding areas that are supposedly smoke-free. Let's all respect each others' opinions.

Well, if you drank too much and ran a red light and plowed into my car , wouldn't that be similar to forcing your drinking on me ? NY has lost millions of $$$ in revenue and thousands of jobs because of non - smoking policies. For all the complaining non smokers did about the health of the poor workers who were forced to breath second hand smoke, when the bans were passed, did the non smokers suddenly come out to the bars and restaurants ? NO ! So what happened ? The owners closed their doors, and all these workers lost their jobs.

and for the record, I am a non-smoker.

There have been a few recent posts saying how nice and friendly this web forum is. However, a poster on Cruisefish has just commented that this post is full of nasty comments (even worse than a certain other popular cruise forum). It is not good when it is being pointed out that the friendliness does not seem to have appeared on this post

Congratulations on quitting smoking. Did smoking cause your asthma?

Lithium batteries are inherently unstable and, if used improperly or without a safety circuit (usually built in to the battery) they can perform a literal meltdown in your pocket. I think that this has happened to only one person with a PV size battery, and one plane with a plane size battery (IIRC it was a new Boeing 787). This is why you cannot have lithium batteries in your checked luggage on planes, or send them in the US Mail.

I wonder why HAL continues to permit smoking on balconies? Perhaps a greater percentage of their passengers are smokers. I will make a point of noticing how many smokers there are on my next HAL cruise in January.

I hate the smell of strong perfume, myself. Most women apply it too heavily. I rarely, if ever use any. A friend of mine was highly allergic to perfumes, smoke, etc. I could never light a fireplace when she visited. Many Doctor's officers now request that you don't use any in their office since patients are allergic.

I havent heard the argument about the batteries. That's pretty strange. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I learned a lot.

i am so happy to hear that you have recently given up smoking. I know how hard that must be. Congratulations! You had a great motivation - saving the money spent on cigarettes for a cruise. :)

The issue of smoking is a very volatile subject. There are strong feelings on both sides. Recently John Heald who blogs for Carnival asked what one thing Carnival could do on their ships to please passengers and many people answered to eliminate smoking completely. I doubt that will happen, though.

I am also a non-smoker and do not feel smokers have the right to pollute my air (sorry to any smokers here but it is a health issue).

I do not believe anyone should smoke on balconies because of the blowback risk for improperly disposed of cig butts.

I support the smoking restrictions.

Below is a poll taken on a Cebebrity thread on another forum. Most interesting in that 94% backed their no balcony smoking ban. If smokers account for 8% of Celebrity guests then some smokers supported the ban as well.

"A while back some of us were playing around with the demographics of smokers in the US, worldwide and on cruise ships. If I recall correctly we assumed about 8%, at the max, were smokers on cruise ships, it would be slightly more on shorter cruises with a younger element and perhaps less on the long cruises where folk are even older . Of course that percentage would be higher on HAL since they have a more open smoking policy now than those of the other majors, balcony smoking allowed. Looks to me like some smokers on Celebrity even voted in approval of a ban on balcony and cabin smoking, quite significant. While, some non-smokers probably go along with casino smoking on Celebrity ships."
