Do you usually use a travel professional, book directly through the cruise line or use an online service? How happy are you with the price, service and help that you receive with your booking?

How do you book your cruise usually?

Sad thing is, and I know everyone has a bad day, but this one agent that I used to deal with, whom used to be fantastic, was a real arse the last time I called. It was as if I was bothering him with regards to price guarantee and getting the lower rate.
This same thing happened to us. We had a few years history with this rep but in one call, she undid the great working relationship we developed. I was rather put out and we had to re-think the use of United Cruises altogether for a while. As it turned out, we found someone else at UC and work with her now. It is very hard to walk away from getting up to 7 miles per dollar spent. Those miles are used for the business and first class air travel to get to embarkation ports. Fortunately, it worked out for us.
I also do all the research and booking myself for cruise, flights and hotels. I find better prices then a package through the cruise line. I had tried AAA one time and the hotels in Rome they offered were not good location and prices higher then I was able to do on my own. With all the travel sites and reviews on line it is now easy to do the research to get good location and prices.
Deejay, I also like the Vacations to go site for prices and ship deck plans so I know whats around my cabin when I book.
We used to use a rep from the cruise line but lately, I have started doing it myself and even do it now for friends. I keep a portfolio for each trip and keep all documentation, payments, flights, hotel reservations, copy of passports, etc in there. That way I know exactly where all of my paperwork is the day of.
Frankly I think I missed my calling and should have been a travel agent for a cruise line. I really enjoy booking for myself as well as our friends!
Yeah, I go pretty much the same route. I love doing the legwork for my family. I did it for land vacations for years. Then we got turned on to cruising and I picked up where I left off.
We used Vacations To Go to book our first 3 cuises and still use their newsletters to see what is available for specific itineraries. We have found the midsize ships of HAL preferable so now we book directly with them. On two occasions we found a better deal being offered through an online travel agency after booking. In both instances HAL matched the TA's pricing and upgraded our cabin on one of them.
Good to know this. HAL prefers you to deal with a TA and then wants to only deal through the agent. I understand when people say that they feel they lose control going through an agent. We asked our agent to tell HAL to deal directly with us. Seems silly to ask the agent to buy for us a special beverage package for example when we can do it ourselves.

It was as if I was bothering him with regards to price guarantee and getting the lower rate. That is why I do my research, what the deals and book when appropriate. In fact, I am now doing it for our friends and put together an entire portfolio with all their travel documents, etc.
Perhaps I missed my calling
You know what ? Lately I have been getting e-mails and calls from an NCL consultant. Every day. I never had one before, I would just book what I wanted with whomever picked up the phone. So, I gave this guy a call back, and he got us a good deal on a 10 day in March out of NY. EC, and we got the same cabin we've had twice before.
I either book via the cruise line's website or my Carnival PVP. I really like talking to a live person, and I feel she knows the ship and recommends the best place on the ship to be.
It is always best to deal with someone knowledgeable.
We usually determine the voyage by #1 itinerary, #2 line and ship, #3 price. We generally have a ballpark idea where we want to go, so we sort out itinerary's that are similar and ones we like by using the websites of cruise lines, pertinent brochures and their special offerings. If we find a number of itineraries, with lines and on ships we like, that are comparable then we start looking at the price. I do that by referring to respective literature and talking to the cruise line agents. If the prices are close then we go back at decide which line and ship we go with. If the prices aren't close, we go with the best offer. Sometimes I put a little heat on to get a better deal.
We always book directly through the cruise line. We use an insurance broker for trip insurance, not the lines. Years ago you had no choice but to use an agent. Nothing against TAs, used to be in that game myself, however we had some not so good experiences that were the direct result of our agent's screw up. When they opened things up so we could book directly it was like a breath of fresh air. Since then, no middleman equates to no grief and stress particularly when we are on the other side of the globe and can't get in touch with the agency.
Yes, I am sure that TAs do make mistakes. We try to double check everything but still things slip through occasionally.
Yes, I see the identical price no matter where it is for a cruise (Alaska on Princess currently). What I find is that the online travel agents throw in some things like onboard credit, so why not book with them? Do some folks think there is an advantage booking directly through Princess or whoever?
I think they feel more in control of the booking. For example, HAL prefers to deal only with agents. When you book through your agency they send all documents through the agent. So, it takes longer to reach you. They prefer questions to come through your agent, too.
i feel that we get more perks going through an agent. Sometimes, she finds us a lower price too.
I like to book directly with the cruise line. Hubby books through the airline to get frequent flyer miles.
Frequent flyer miles are good to accumulate. We used to book cruises directly but found that we got more perks going through a travel agent.
