We also have been caught in the winds at Cozumel. As we were docking a gust of wind caught the aft of the ship and slammed it into the dock, splitting the huge rubber bummer. We had a large gash in the side of the ship. They ended up repairing it before we left Cozumel (several hours later than scheduled) by welding a steel plate over the hole.

As as much as I wish I was on a cruise, glad it wasn’t either of these.

"Fixing it on the fly" ought to be interesting. Lot of cutting, welding, and parts needed. Navy combat ships can do it with trained crews. they're expected to. be interesting to see what CCL actually does. It may be above the waterline, but bad weather might get them to rethink that. Besides, might cause just a bit of inconvenience having the dining areas closed. just a bit...

Amazing it doesn't happen more often. the physics involved in moving,stopping or turning that mass of steel, even without the wind, is amazing. The Captain is absolutely responsible, even with a Pilot onboard.

Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt.

3 years ago I was on Valor and the Breeze nearly hit us in Cozumel. We were waiting our turn to leave Cozumel (wind high) as lots of ships in and the port people wanted one ship at a time to leave to make sure all is clear due to wind. But the Breeze captain was apparently in a hurry , so he was backing out and the wind caught the ship and like a sail it was pushing the Breeze into the back end of Valor. I was in back looking and saw the ship coming, people started to scream, but I thought it was cool, so I stayed, and behold the back end of Breeze was churning up the water, thursters and screws wide open, missed us by feet...interesting. I wonder who was at fault on that one, pilot or captain.

Apparently took out a third of the MDR .. both levels. The upper crashed down into the lower. Rumour has it they want to try to do the repairs on the fly and continue to sail. Not sure that is wise. I somehow doubt that the ship would fair well in a storm or very rough seas. Apparently or so they claim the incident was due to high winds ... but the ship was trying to back in between 2 other ships ... how smart is that in high winds ...

I saw this as well. Wow. Talking about taking interfleet rivalry to a new level .... I guess that is one helmsman and captain that will be getting their resumes ready.
