Coral vs. Island Princess

Going on Island Princess this week.  Her sister ship is Coral.  Haven't been on either.  From what I've read, Coral is, I believe, original configuration, pure as the wind driven snow.  Island is a ship touched by greedy men.  They shoved more rooms onto her for more profits.  A soiled dove.  Who has been on both and what is your opinion of each?

Good luck. I have a friend who with his wife took a cruise on the Island a few weeks ago, they loved it. But, it was the first time they were ever on a cruise.

We have been on the Coral and really liked the vessel. The only negative for us was that the MDR was understaffed both in the kitchen and wait section. It was the worst MDR experience we have had on Princess and we have almost 300 days sailing on them now. We enjoyed the cruise though, as we simply switched over to the specialties and avoided the MDR.

From all the reviews, I've read from guests very familiar with both the Island and Coral, is that Princess is receiving a resounding F minus for alterations to the Island.

I've read enough and heard enough now that we avoid booking the Island. Only thing I can see that was an improvement was getting rid of those fake jet aircraft engine looking nacelles on the Island. Here is a pretty good summation of the changes that I copied from a poster on another forum.

Improvements:

--A slightly expanded and redesigned Horizon Court

-- Looks like an International Cafe will replace La Patisserie-

 -- Expanded Sanctuary

- And that's it

--Literally EVERYTHING ELSE is a 'non-improvement':

 - The compete removal of a major entertainment venue (the Universe Lounge)

 - Reduction in size of a major onboard revenue generator (casino)

- The loss of all aft public viewing access on Promenade, Dolphin, Caribe, and Baja Decks

 - An exercise and aerobics venue with NO windows to the outside
 - No additional dining or entertainment venues
 - No public spaces getting larger
 - 110+ added staterooms and suites.

Thanks Kennicott.  Another positive I've seen is just about all the reviews I've read have been happy with the staff and I'm easy to please.  I always use the ship gym so this ship will be interesting to see.  I read that not only is the gym shoved in the center line aft, it's not well maintain.  I'll be certainly giving a full review of Island when I return.

I'm packed and just today added an extra day at the hotel in San Pedro so I can go visit the USS Iowa.

I've been on ships before where all I've heard was negative stuff about them before we went, turned out they were some of the best voyages we been on. Have a great cruise and be sure and give us all here a complete run down upon return.

Will do!

That's a fun thing to tour ... we also went to Shoreline Village and hung out for the day on our return ... it's about 10 minutes from Pier ...lots to do there too!

Sorry to report that I have been on neither.

You certainly have it good out there in FL for cruising.  Wish we had as many options out here West as you do out there.

Have a great cruise.

It was awkward walking on deck 7 on the Island Princess, because it doesn't have a complete open circuit around the ship.  You either go through the ship at the end that has been converted to cabins or turn around and retrace your steps.  It isn't difficult but frustrating.  We enjoyed the Island Princess but have not sailed the Coral Princess to be able to give you a comparison.

When we were on this cruise, it was the Crown Princess but same ports ... really enjoyed it!  Put a penny on the track in Astoria that the trolley runs on - lol!

I loved the Island Princess. The Horizon Court is forward and a lovely place in the morning.

The best place for the transit is forward to the secret deck on deck 10 or 11.

Enjoy  the ship...
