Review summary

Although I have quite a few complaints, we still very much enjoyed our vacation. The inconsistency of drinks, low quality food (most times) and constant up selling with very little activities on ship was disappointing. When they were good, they were very good and staff and service were primarily very good. I would not cruise this ship, and probably not this line without really checking other options very thoroughly. That said, if they had the only cruise that worked for my dates and included ports I wanted to see, I might. I wouldn’t recommend to others tho.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was easy. The police who staff the area are overly aggressive with the yelling. I realize they are keeping things moving but as a group, we were trying to stay together. Screaming without listening was annoying.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
The food was the biggest disappointment. We chose this ship because of reputation of food and dates. While I had several really good bites of food, there were many problems. In the dining room for breakfast they were flat out rude about people sitting together in a fairly empty dining room. Overall the food seemed more like bad wedding/catering meals. Much of it was along the lines of what you get at a Denny’s or Applebees. It often seemed to have been sitting around, congealed, dried out, overly reheated. Leftovers were often repurposed under new names. The Lido buffets closed down during peak times (returning from excursions) and only had bad pizza, a salad bar (which was very good if you didn’t let them apply dressing) and old sandwiches. The children’s food bar by the pool had food but no serving utensils and when questioned, they said it wasn’t time yet but the food just sat out uncovered. They ran out of Tito’s, Grey Goose and Michelob Ultra at pool bar. The waiter was nice but had too many tables and were not able to interact with table which was a favorite from previous cruises. The consistency was just so all over the place even within the same service. I had a great burger from poolside eatery and an awful bit of one. Desserts at Lido bar looked like they had been sitting out for ages. Ice cream grainy, etc. Those of us that had cruised before thought the quality was worst of any cruise we had taken and our new cruising friends thought it was slightly better and on par with chain restaurants. They also constantly tried to up sell specialty restaurants but a $75 up charge means I need to get a dinner worth the $75 plus the cost of dinner included I fare - and it wasn’t. It was more in line with what I was expecting without an up charge. Coffee was frustrating and bar in Explorations Cafe was not good. Paper lids on coffee cups absorbed coffee and changed flavor significantly. They need a better environmentally friendly option.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
This was another mixed bag. What we did was fun, but at times every activity offered was either a sales pitch for future cruise, buying a computer or other on ship items or they were additional charge. I can see charging for bingo but yoga? I felt the entire. Ruiz’s was light on activities and the ones I attended had to be moved to larger locations and they ran out of supplies. Pool was nice. Smoking ruined aft pool. There were not a lot of kids on board but I suspect more than usual. They liked the hot tub which prevented us from using it. Staff running activities were good.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Hillier (sp?) the German juggling comedian was fantastic. The other comedian and dancers were just average and shows repetitive. The orchestra was fantastic but often ran out of space\seats. Piano players in Billboard lounge were fun..

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
For the most part the service was good. Bartender Aurora was good and consistent with alcohol pours ( not true of other bars).

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Ship was easy to get around (smaller ship) and decor was fine.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
We were traveling with group and I paid for 5 people so we selected inside cabins. It was small but layout was good and fine for 2 people. Others in our group had balcony and it was fine too. Stewards were great. Bathroom was roomy compared to cabin so that worked well.

Ship tip

Overall I think this is a cruise for older adults except that in exchange for less to do, I want better food and better entertainment. I cannot recommend this cruise. We were a group of high school, college age, 40s, 50s and 70s. Only the one set of parents in 40s who never cruised before would recommend. We did have fun but I believe another ship would have been better suited for our group and could have offered more activities, less upwelling and better food.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida Did not visit port

I live in Orlando and just drove in.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

4 out of 5
Our excursion was cancelled due to bad weather but this is beautiful resort. Food was just ok. The biggest complaint is that they started closing up bar and activities 2 hours before last ferry to boat. I assume this is due to low turnout due to weather, but it had cleared up and we wanted to stay on beach. Our kids were told a reservation time for a sailboat at 3 but when they came back they closed instead. Little San Salvador’s is gorgeous though.

Grand Turk Island

4 out of 5
I expected to love Grand Turk. The water is prettiest I’ve seen, but the island isn’t much. We did a horseback riding, dune buggy, zip line, snorkel excursion that was fun. It was more a taste of those activities and we wished they lasted longer (especially horse and dune buggy). Reef was good for snorkeling. The shopping area is the same as everywhere. We booked through the cruise and didn’t find the same excursion any cheaper anywhere else.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

5 out of 5
I was not expecting much from this port but it was my favorite. I did the hike, ju,p, slide at Damajagua Falls and it was thrilling. Island was beautiful and staff really appreciated the cruise business. Shops were the same as Grand Turk. We didn’t see the pool bar area until leaving island but it looked nice.

Key West, Florida

4 out of 5
We booked with Fury outside of cruise. We did a morning snorkel trip which was a bit rough but nice. Snorkeling here is very disappointing and limited visibility. They constantly reminded us to reduce expectations. I’ve been snorkeling a lot so skipped that part but was still enjoyable. We walked to lunch at other marina and ate at Conch Republic which worked hard to accommodate our group. I had great food there. Then we rented jet skis from Fury. This was fabulous but the guides jet ski broke down and so we had to sit and wait for someone to come. As a result we missed part of the tour and had to go really fast back. It was rough and we got beat up a bit from waves but still a nice excursion. I’d recommend Fury as I’ve used them before but my last experience with them was better.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easiest disembarkation ever. We wheeled our own luggage off, left at time of our choosing and had no delays.

We will be on the Zuiderdam in March going to Panama Canal which I hear is great. We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam in March 2018 and loved it. Food was absolutely delicious at buffet for lunch and breakfast and MDR for dinner. The Dive-In had the best hamburgers we’ve ever had. Buffet staff were unbelievably friendly and always smiling. Our cabin steward always greeted us by name and asked how our ports were each day. He was so nice and our cabin was always spotless. We weren’t crazy about some of the shows and there’s not a lot to do on the ship during the day, but that’s what the ports are for. We loved the ship.

Glad you did get some enjoyment. Yes Holland America is geared towards the older cruiser. We did a 17 day Panama Canal which we enjoyed but also felt some things weren’t up to par. We didn’t think we would cruise them again but we are going to next month because of convenience. We live in San Diego area and we can do round trip out of San Diego which means we don’t have to fly. We aren’t into night life and just want a relaxing cruise.

Holland America is not known for their entertainment and is primarily aimed at older cruisers. We were not impressed with the food either on our 2 HAL cruises and were surprised since we had heard they were a step above other cruise lines. Nothing was terrible, but not up to what we experienced on Carnival or Royal Caribbean. It seems that many who rave about HAL and the food rarely, if ever, cruise any other lines, so they have nothing to compare it to. We would consider cruising with HAL again, but only if we could not find a similar itinerary on another line.
