Review summary

This was our first Viking cruise. The service was outstanding, the food delicious and the ambiance was lovely and relaxing. We are long time cruisers but will continue on Viking as it is head and shoulders above the rest.

Embarkation

Embarkation was fast, efficient and flawless.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
All the restaurants were excellent. It was a joy to have so many different venues to choose from. The Buffet selections and "The Restaurant" menu were just as special as Chef's Table and Manfredi's. The variety of choices, presentation, superior service and ambiance enhanced the dining experience. Ayalah (spelling) was especially attentive. She seemed to be in every venue at some time during the trip and we made it a point to sit at her table. The themed meals in the Chef's Table and lobster night in The Restaurant were special treats.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We especially appreciated the Sabbath services, Chanukah services and celebrations. It was very considerate of Viking to recognize those who celebrated. This was our first trip on Viking. We have traveled on many other cruise lines and it was the first time this occurred. We will continue to sail on Viking. In fact we have 3 more booked for 2023.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The stage shows and musicians were a delight. We especially liked the ABBA and Beatles tributes. The classical duo and pianist were a relaxing interlude in the Atrium and Wintergreen during High Tea. We spent our afternoons reading and relaxing listening to their beautiful music.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The service staff were exceptional. It seemed Alayah (Asst. Waitress) and Marcela (steward) anticipated our every want and had it to us as we asked. At every turn there was a smiling, helpful staff member to answer questions or show us the way when we were lost.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
There was staff cleaning some aspect of the ship all day, every day. In these days of post-COVID it was very reassuring that we would stay healthy. The hand washing stations at restaurants and sanitizer stands were also very welcome.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was adequate but we decided we wanted more room on our next cruises and booked Penthouse Jr. Suites. We appreciated the accommodations of extra pillows and distilled water. Our cabin was always clean, towels refreshed, and necessities replenished. Marcela touched base with us every day to make sure everything was to our approval.

Ship tip

Take the cooking classes. Anton, was the perfect chef to explain the ingredients, procedures and demonstrate cooking techniques.

Ports of call

Cruise Gatun Lake (Inside Panama Canal)

5 out of 5
Cruising through the canal was very interesting. We specifically enjoyed the commentary from the "experts".

Colon, Panama

We took the boat ride to look at local fauna. We realize the animals cannot show up on demand but in hind site, we wouldn't recommend this excursion. There was too much time sailing around, stopping in coves, searching for animals with little results. The guide was not miked and we couldn't hear what she was saying.

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

5 out of 5
We took the Hacienda excursion. Percy was AWESOME. His depth of knowledge was impressive which made his demonstrations of banana flowers, coffee beans, sugar cane and brown sugar fascinating. He even stopped the bus to point out active steam vents emanating from a volcano. He spoke the entire time we were traveling, pointing out the plants, animals and explaining the history of the area. As a retired educator, I was very impressed. Percy made the long bus ride interesting and more than worth it to get to the Hacienda.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

3 out of 5
It was fun to have the monkeys and Macaws drape themselves on us. However, there was little explanation by the guide to enhance the experience. The guide on the bus was subpar. She spent her time speaking to the bus driver in Creole and not to the participants.

Belize City, Belize

5 out of 5
Xunantunich was fascinating. We have been to the Pyramids in Egypt and Xunantunich was even more impressive since it is in the middle of a jungle.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
The San Gervasio Archeological site was fascinating. Our guide, Luis, had an amazing depth of knowledge of the area, the Mayan's and their history. He started his commentary when we got on the bus and didn't stop until we got off. He supplemented his explanations with photos and maps to ensure we understood what we were seeing.

Cruise Gulf Of Mexico

5 out of 5
The cruise was relaxing the perfect end to the trip.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Efficient, fast, and painless.
