Review summary

I unfortunately would never book with Royal Caribbean again due to poor food, but mainly poor service.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
Our check in was 1pm, but room was not ready for us until 7:30pm. After bugging housekeeping 5 or 6 times to finish our room, it finally got cleaned for us. (We were told several times "after my next break I will finish" or "I will come back before the end of my shift")

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
The food on the ship was awful. This was the biggest disappointment for most of us on he ship. Every restaurant we went to (buffet or specialty), people were sending back their food left, right, and center. We had heard from others that the food was good on Royal Caribbean, which is why we booked with them, but unfortunately the food was just terrible. Very bland, cold, and no seasoning whatsoever. Our "mozzarella sticks" were canned cheese whiz. We even spoke to a dining manager who agreed that she wouldn't eat any of this food herself.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Plenty to do on the ship with slides, rock climbing, surfing, casino, shows, arcades, etc.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Hairspray was great! The magician was decent. Guitar performer at the pub was also great!

Children's Programs

Did not have children with us

Service and Staff

This was the biggest fail for me. I have never experienced such poor service in my life! Not to speak for ALL staff on ship of course, but we had a number of horrible experiences on the ship that left a really sour taste in our mouth. #1 - Our housekeeping was absolutely awful!!! He was so rude and lazy! Each block of rooms is assigned a housekeeper. Ours didn't clean our room for 2 of the days on the ship. On the day of check-in we had to ask him 5 times to get our room ready (it wasn't ready until 7:30pm). On the days where our room was cleaned (5 of 7 days), we would leave in the morning for each port at 8am expecting to come back to a clean room around 7pm, but our room was only cleaned once without us having to ask. We would have to call and ask him to come and clean. And one day he decided to ignore the "do not disturb sign" on the door and just walked right in on me nude without even knocking and started talking like this was normal. #2 - On the day of checkout, we were given an 8:45am check out time as we were in a Junior Suite. The housekeeper and his supervisor started knocking on our door at 7:30am trying to get us to leave the room. We spoke to them about the checkout time we have and they agreed, yet they continued to knock on the door every 10 minutes asking us to leave as they are on a tight schedule and need time to clean. The supervisor was incredibly rude and at 7:45am told us "we have overstayed our time on the ship and its time to leave". I was SHOCKED at this service! We were being rushed out like crazy! And then we leave the room, but my friend forgot $500US of spa goods that he bought from the spa on the coffee table. And they would not allow us back in the room and would not bring us the bag! After raising the issue to the security manager and about 10 other security people, we were told that as our checkout time has come and gone, we are no longer allowed to go to the room to grab our spa purchases. We found one manager who was willing to go to the room himself, but came back saying the spa bag is no longer there and that its likely one of the room cleaners took it at this point. We were told that if we wanted something done, we would need to contact the local police! Unbelievable! So now my friend lost $500US of spa supplies due to terrible service so that housekeeping could steal them. Keep in mind, we spent $6,200 US on the cruise, $3,500US on board, and over $4,000US in the casino. We are completely blown away with how terrible this treatment was. Will never book again with Royal Caribbean and recommend you dont either! #3 - We had a ton of difficulty booking an excursion while on the ship. We were sent to the Shore Excursions desk to book (kayaking in Palma de Mallorca). They sent us to Guest Services as they were having issues booking. Guest services told us we would need to come back the following day to speak to the senior person at Shore Excursions. We came back the following day and they were able to book us in (we were told to meet at 8:30am at the Royal Theatre the following morning for excursion departure). We went to the Royal Theatre and met up with a bunch of the other people on the excursion, but no staff showed up. After heading to the Shore excursions desk, we were told that the excursion was cancelled as the company running the excursion canceled it. There were no other excursions available at this point for the day so we called the company directly who did the excursion and booked directly through them. They also told us that they did not cancel with the cruise ship so no idea where that story came from. Also, the cost was HALF of what the ship was charging! I understand the ship will have markup, but to mark up 50% is absurd. So the group of us went on the excursion directly through the provider and had a great time.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship common areas were well maintained and kept clean and tidy.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Junior Suite was decent size and nice large balcony. Watch out for "Igade" the housekeeper and his manager. If you get them while on the ship, I would recommend asking to be moved.

Ship tip

Dont do it! Or if you DO go, eat as much off the ship as possible, and set expectations for poor service while on the ship.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

4 out of 5
About 1hr 20min taxi from Rome so be prepared to spend about $75Euro per person to get to the city.

Naples, Italy

5 out of 5
Port is right in Naples so you dont need to arrange for transportation which was nice. recommend going to Del President for pizza!

Barcelona, Spain

3 out of 5
Centre of Barcelona is a quick taxi ride away. Unfortunately the day in Barcelona was a Sunday so everything was closed (including the market).

Palma De Mallorca, Balearic Islands

5 out of 5
Recommend booking an excursion directly through a local company. Far better excursions available on this island through local companies. And will save you about 50% of the cost!

Marseille (Provence), France

4 out of 5
Port is a 10 min walk from centre of Marseille. Some nice bakeries and cafes to visit.

La Spezia, Italy

2 out of 5
Veeeeeeeery far from Florence or Piza. So there isn't really anything to do in La Spezia without planning an excursion or taking a 2 hour taxi/shuttle.
