Review summary

A beautiful, modern ship but just fell short of our expectations for Royal Caribbean.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Embarkation was fairly smooth but there was a lot of uncertainty getting through everything. Using the app, it seemed like we just needed the set sail pass found there but when we got to the port, the set sail pass was not available (just for me - it was available for my husband). I was getting an alert to proceed to the check in desk but there was none. I wasn't sure which line to use, either. We were able to find a representative that helped us and it went smoothly from there but I don't like not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
I usually love Royal Caribbean's dining but nearly everything on this ship tasted old and everything tasted the same. I had chicken cordon bleu in the main dining room that was actually inedible, it was that tough! I was shocked at the lack of availability of gluten-free alternatives throughout the ship. In the Windjammer, they had the "Gluten Free Corner" that consisted of 3 - 4 items that were incredibly similar day-to-day; always beans, rice or potato and some sort of stew or curry. It was surprising that I could not get a gluten free hamburger or hot dog bun. There was very little variety in the Windjammer overall. By day 5, we were just tired of eating the same thing over and over again. In the Park Cafe, I asked if I could get a gluten free pannini and I was served a GF multigrain sandwich. Very disappointing! The one stand out was Jamie's Italian. I had the best lamb chops of my life there. But, a person should not have to pay for specialty dining.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
There was a nice variety of ship activities such as zip lining, slides, pools, etc. but the schedule of trivia, classes, seminars, etc. was lack luster. There were a lot of times that my husband and I were trying to find something to do and were bored.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The band in Dazzles was amazing. I was disappointed that there wasn't a headliner-type musical production. We saw "1977" in Studio B; really great use of technology but several of the performers fell during the performance. Other shows were "sold out" as soon a we got on the ship so we were not able to attend them.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Most of the staff seemed like they were new hires.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Amazingly clean and beautiful ship. Very bright, light and airy. Central Park was my favorite part of the ship. The staff works very hard to keep even the smallest crevices clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
This is the smallest cabin we have ever stayed in. That being said it was laid out well with plenty of storage. I really appreciated the curved shower door (vs. a curtain).

Ship tip

Check out the Park Cafe (included) as an alternative to Windjammer for breakfast and lunch.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

4 out of 5
The types of shore excursions were pretty standard for the Caribbean but the port was really great - plenty of shopping, entertainment and even a beach. A shore excursion isn't even needed.

Wonderfully smooth - no waiting around in the lobby.
