Review summary

We booked only a month in advance because we needed to get away to somewhere warm and relaxing. We loved it.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Incredibly quick and efficient, just after 11 a.m. Fifteen minutes, tops, from stepping out of the hotel shuttle to stepping onto the Royal Princess.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We had second seating of traditional dining. Attentive, friendly service and broad selection of excellent meals. No one goes away hungry. We opted for Sabatini’s, the Italian specialty restaurant, one night. Very good meal and nice, quiet venue, but we decided it wasn’t worth the additional cost and won’t go that route next time. The buffet is the typical buffet bedlam. Huge place, lots of decent choices.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Decent array, nicely done

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Full range from great singer/dancer shows and very funny pair of comedians to so-so ventriloquist, with juggler and checkerboard guy in between.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
No complaints. They strive for excellence and consistently deliver.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The largest ship we’ve been on, 3,500-plus passengers. Yet at no time did it seem crowded. Very clean, and ongoing maintenance, including changing carpeting.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This was a deluxe balcony, and it met our needs very well. Sure, you have to do the cruise ship shuffle at times, but no big deal. The bathroom isn’t much bigger than a phone booth (remember those?), but they managed to give you a few cubic inches in the shower so you have some elbow room. I’ve seen complaints about the balcony being too small, but it was fine for sitting and relaxing.

Ship tip

D225 is just forward of the tender boats, so you look down and out at the sea, not at orange boats.

Ports of call

Princess Cays (Cruise Line Private Island) Did not visit port

Strong winds prevented tendering ashore, so we had an extra day at sea instead of on the beach.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

3 out of 5
St. Thomas isn’t much to write home about from what we saw, but we had a great crew on the Turtle Cove catamaran snorkeling outing.

Roseau, Dominica Did not visit port

Went to Martinique instead of Dominica, I believe because of hurricane damage

St. George's, Grenada

3 out of 5
Did one of the spice tours. Interesting, but nothing special.

Bonaire, Netherlands Special Municipality

5 out of 5
Did a 4WD tour and saw interesting stuff including cacti and salt mounds. Also happened to catch some sort of colorful carnival parade of kids. Something like Marie Gras, but a week and a half early.

Oranjestad, Aruba

5 out of 5
Loved the snorkeling outing.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Quick and way, aided by the fact that we used EZ-check for our luggage and had special short line at CBP because we are in Global Entry program and also downloaded Mobile Passport app in advance.
