Review summary

We spent 5 days prior to cruise exploring Rome and then did trip. Athens was constantly on strike, so we never made it. Booked a private tour in Santorini with a small van which could go places the ships buses could not.

I highly recommend renting a car and driving through Italy. The drivers are a bit fast and crazy ( no worse than California drivers), but the roads are excellent. And you don't have to schlep luggage in and out of train stations!

Did you take the train to/from Rome? We have a week before the cruise. Flying into Venice, planning to go through Tuscany to Rome.
