Never cruised with Cunard before and had heard some horror stories which thank goodness did not come true. People where very nice and multi national which we didn't think would be but was a nice surprise. The people on board where quite a bit older than we were but were all nice and friendly. The price of the drinks even though we had done our homework before hand were still quite expensive but were very nice and worth the bill at the end.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Brilliant left early to avoid roadworks, no roadworks so got there at 1230 (embarkation was 1500) was on the boat by 1315
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
The food in the Britannia restaurant was amazing I have dietary problems but they accommodated me brilliantly. Even in the buffet the foods was fab, i have never had sushi for lunch before on other cruise lines. Drinks are very expensive but personally the drinks package was too expensive $69.99 per person per day so prepared ourselves for a bigger bar bill than normal.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The pool areas where clean there was a lot of seating available, it never felt crowded even though we where nearly at maximum capacity. There are no climbing walls or anything of that sort. There is a gym but we never used it. We walked around the promenade deck which was 1/3 mile (helped keep off some of the weight)
Entertainment
3 out of 5
he shows in the evening where a little more pedestrian than i liked (watching a flute player for 45 minutes didn't really rock my world) but people did say she was brilliant. There where a couple of shows & a comedian who was really good but the shows didn't appeal to me (personal preference only) they had guest speakers on the sea days who where fantastic.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Our room steward was very polite and helpful. All staff where polite even down to the maintenance people all said good morning/evening. The waiters in the restaurants where very knowledgeable but never intrusive.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
The layout and design of the ship is old style class, everywhere was clean. In some of the lifts it smelt like washing powder (it was very nice) there where some places where a little TLC was needed, silly things like the carpet was coming away in the lift, the windows needed a good clean but as i say really small things that had no effect on my holiday.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
The stateroom was larger than we have had on previous cruise lines and was very clean, it was an obstructed oceanview we had the end of a life boat outside but we could still see out which was fine and it made the room very light. The bed was a kingsize and VERY comfy, we had a complimentary bottle of fizz waiting when we arrived.
Ship tip
Coffee/tea & fruit juices are available all day in the Lido we didn't realise this until half way through the week.
Olden was amazing and beautiful, we did a trip we bought when we got off the boat to see the Glacier, it was £25.00 each (cheaper than Cunard charged) wish it went a little closer to the Glacier but for picture purposes it was brilliant.
Quite commercialised but still very beautiful, we bought a trip off the boat to a viewing platform in the mountains above the Fjord £30.00 each for about 1 & 1/2 hours. Worth it for the views and the mad driving up the mountain. We had a look at the railway museum not really that good but informative. If you want to go on the railway it might be worth buying the ticket when you get to Flaam (only if on the internet there are none available) as the boat reserves all the tickets until it arrives in port then releases the unsold ones back to the railway.
We had our berth changed at the last minute so we had to disembark in the actual port which was not very ascetically pleasing, the shuttle bus only took you to the dock gate and it was about a 10 minute walk before you made it into the "nice" bit of Bergen. There wasn't really much to do except shop or go to the vehicular (the ques where out of the entrance and part the way down the road) and it rained, which it does a lot in Bergen.
