Review summary

Quantum of the Seas is an unbelievably beautiful ship. It is brand new and gorgeous beyond expectations. The artwork throughout is stunning and the public areas are so beautiful.  I stayed in the owner suite and it was so roomy and deluxe. We were treated like royalty by the crew. Being on a ship that was almost 90% asian passengers may be difficult for some people, however, because we were in a suite, the amenities gave us a break from the general population.  The cruise is definitely catering to the Asian market, so do not be surprised to find that things are not like a RCCL that sails out of the US.  The food in the buffet was geared toward Asian tastes but the specialty restaurants were awesome and great fun. I highly recommend staying in a suite to have the ability to work with a concierge and get a little break from the crowds. Well worth the extra price for access to the private dining room alone!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Buffet is geared towards Asian tastes. Jamie Oliver's restaurant was awesome.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
So much to do, gorgeous shopping, loveliest artwork.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Great acrobatic shows. The public areas for entertainment were unbelievable. Cool robotics and LED light shows.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Dont have kids but there were alot of things for the kids to do including roller skating and bumper cars!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Loved our concierge Bing Bai. She literally was the best thing on the whole cruise. She made our experience special. I enjoyed all of the attention from the officers and appreciated seeing the Captain many times during the voyage.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I have never seen such a beautiful ship. The quality of everything was beyond my expectations

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
I stayed in the owners suite and it was spacious and gorgeous. There was a full sized dining table, pull out sectional couch, flat screen TV and a separate bathroom. The bedroom was a comfortable king sized bed, full bathtub and separate shower and 2 sinks. The balcony was beautiful but it was too cold to enjoy it. The cabin was almost too big for us as we really didnt sit around in the room watching TV. Perhaps a grand suite would be fine in size as long as you get the amenities of being in a suite. I know that a junior suite does not qualify for this most important benefit.

Ship tip

If you can afford a suite and you are not a fan of crowds, make sure you book a suite. It is so worth it!

Ports of call

Shanghai, China

Hiroshima, Japan

Confusing to take the train to the peace memorial. Make sure you have your Yen ready to go as there is no money exchange there, except for a bank down the street from the train station.

Yokohama (Tokyo), Japan

5 out of 5
We booked Tokyo on your own excursion. About 1 hour on tour bus. Definitely not long enough time spent in Tokyo on this port day.

Kobe (Kyoto), Japan

5 out of 5
Took the Osaka on your own excursion. 1 hour on the bus to Osaka. Osaka was the highlight of the whole trip. So much shopping and food! I know others said Kobe was just ok, so choose to go to Osaka!

According to the local Union Steward, I resemble that remark!

As a person that makes a living based off of technology, I have to agree with BDRebel.  Robots are cold and uncaring and frankly, when it truly hits the fan, you want someone you can have a loud conversation with.   ;)

You haven't met my boss then......

Given the choice of a computer/robot or a human, I would rather deal with the human. I think that RCI is going the robot route for the glitz and newness of it. Unfortunately, they lose customer service points along the way.

Technology was super cool and fast! I enjoyed Wifi faster than home, the app onboard was very useful too. The staff took our orders on Ipads and we ordered drinks from the robot at bionic bar. As for using the ipads for excursions, they functioned brilliantly and we were able to book excursions with ease. The problem was actually with RCCL for not giving great descriptions of the excursions and there wasnt anyone manning the excursion desk to ask questions about specific details. That was the only stumbling block, no human available and we had to simply rely on the scant information available‚‚ and hope we were happy with the tour we knew very little about. Our concierge tried her best to answer but since it was the first time at all of these ports, she didnt know much about them either.‚‚

Ah yeah. that makes sense.  It's really a weakness for a lot of the cruise lines. The best descriptions that I've found are actually Princess Cruises. The detail associated with their excursions is broken from beginning to end of excursion and down to the number of steps (stairs) and distance in feet. Very helpful.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time... that's great. I am a bit confused by two of your comments. On one hand you marvel at the use of technology on the ship but on the other it seemed to contribute to an issue with selecting excursions, "Not alot of information was given about excursions and there was not a human to talk to about them. Everything was booked on an iPad."

Would you mind commenting on how the technology could improve in the area of excursion/tours? What was the stumbling block for why this did not work as well?

Thank you

We found the technology on the ship amazing. All of the robots and Ipads all over the place. The internet worked lightening fast for us, way faster than my home Wifi. They must have figured out the problem that others were complaining about and made it super!
