Review summary

This was the seventh cruise for my wife and I and NCL is quickly becoming our favorite cruise line due mainly to it's freestyle cruising concept. The ship atmosphere is relaxed and informal which we both really enjoy. We planned this cruise for just the two of us and not with a group. If, like us, you enjoy an informal atmosphere and prefer to dine when you want and with whom you want, then freestyle cruising is the answer as it was for us.

Ports of call

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5
Tourists everywhere at this very popular Mexican port city. The ship's Cozumel & Shopping tour turned out to be a nice low key drive around the island and then dropped off at the shopping district. A very pleasant day. Especially liked the stop at the tequila distillery where abundant free samples were provided.

Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala

Not much at this Guatemalan container port. We felt it best to stick with a ship tour at this stop and limit ourselves to shopping at the port area. We selected a tour of the countryside followed by a guided visit to the Mayan Archeological site at Quirigua. If you are into history and culture like us it's worth it otherwise find something else to do.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

Since we are very interested in historical places and local culture, we opted for the ship's tour of the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. We found the tour both informative and interesting. But probably not a good choice for younger folks or kids. A long bus ride followed by visits to the ruins and lectures on Mayan culture.

Belize City, Belize

We choose a tour of Belize City followed by a drive to the Alton Ha Mayan ruins. The ruins were interesting and our tour guide was great but the bus ride to the ruins was almost an hour over a bumpy, partially paved rural road. Be prepared if you decide on this tour.

Pros: An outstanding crew committed to service and some great specialty restaurants.

Cons: The tender port at Belize. Hope for calm seas for this half hour ride in a hot and cramped tender boat.
