NCL nickel & dime by Js46817598

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

NCL may have invented freestyle cruising, but not everything is free! The fares may be very competitive, but once you begin to add up all the extra charges for the specialty restaurants it becomes pricey. I would rather have a choice of restaurants and pay a little more in the overall cabin price, then be nickel & dimed to death. As for entertainment, there were very few shows on board my sailing. And because of an outbreak of "the virus" there was no self service and lots of service people standing at each and every restaurant and in every elevator and public space with antibacterial spray. Does not give one a good feeling. Consequently to get a cup of coffee in the morning meant standing on line. This was NOT a holiday sailing and even so, it was a long wait. The buffet was horrible. It was really a cafeteria. Went once and never went back.

Excellent ship and cruise by HerbertG

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

A very pleasurable cruise. The size of the ship made it hardly feel as if was moving. Lots of quiet places and plenty of bars and entertainment throughout the ship. Food was exceptionally good, in particular both the Mexican and Japanese restaurants were the best anywhere.

good first cruise-- would recommend by JohnH5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

itinerary is great. freestyle dinning experience is good in that the selection of when/where to eat is an big advantage, however the taste/selection of the food is just average. ship staff is very friendly/helpful. stateroom size is good, but this being my first cruise i have nothing to compare it to. would highly recommend getting a balcony because it makes the room seem a lot bigger/ more spacious. overall i would recommend this cruise. it is a good experience if you are looking to view the multiple resort areas of the mexican riviera-- especially if you are trying to decide which specific area to visit on a future vacation.

NEVER ON NCL by DianeS24

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I have never been on a Cruise that had terrible food, the pool on board was made for kids not adults. We have to pay extra to use the pool in the SPA,due to the fact that the outside pool had children and teens playing around in it. Impossible to swim or just relax. The food on board was horrible. My husband and I went into the Cagney's and I ordered a half of a chicken for dinner. I had such a small piece of white meat and it looked like someone pressed together datk meat. A half of chicken to me is a wing. breast and leg one total piece. I cannot tell you what I had. The other resturants rated the same. When I asked for a soft boiled egg I was told it takes too long to make????????????? When the Captian spoke it sounded like a bunch of garble he was very hard to understand. I have been been on five cruises, thought we would try NCL what a mistake. Our bathroom by the end of the cruise had a horrbile smell of urine. I found that it was coming from the bathroom cleaning brush in the wash room. It made me sick. So you have lost a cruiser,I will tell others also not to crusise with NCL

Compared to other cruise lines this ranks high. Food was good, and the service was top notch. Our excurisions on ports of call were excelent and the those staffing each excursion did a knock out job. We enjoued the entertainment espically Bud Anderson.

Satisfactory cruise by KaylanT

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I was very upset in the change in our itinerary's for the cruise. i thought the seating in the buffet dining hall was not very intimate, it was very "cafeteria style". The service was wonderful and the entertainment was great. We really enjoyed the variety of shows each night. It was nice to see the ship constantly being cleaned and cared for.

Subpar cruise - not recommended! by GregB12

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

Most of the "free" food on this ship (6 restaurants to choose from) was not really worth eating. The buffet and Italian restaurants were absolutely awful, but the Endless Summer Mexican restaurant was the best bet -- good fajitas and margaritas. There's a little "diner" called Blue Lagoon that also made good burgers and fish & chips. Other than these two places, you'll need to spend an extra $15-20 per person to eat at the optional "upgrade" restaurants to get some decent food. (The steakhouse, Cagney's, was by far the best and worth the $20 pp.) The entertainment on this ship was predictably cheesy and lousy, which is expected on a low price cruise line. Average looking performers sang and danced poorly, subpar comedians (and a ventriloquist) performed tired routines, the Second City improv troupe displayed a complete lack of talent at improv -- but at least the Chinese acrobats were a lot of fun to watch. Norwegian cruises are all about the "upsell" -- every single thing you do on the ship ends in a sales pitch for another service or product they attempt to get you to buy. We paid top dollar for very poor massages on the first day (avoid the spa altogether, we say) and they ended with a sales pitch for body creams and lotions. Also, don't bother with the expensive excursions. Instead of paying $75 pp or more, just get off the ship and jump into a taxi (or water taxi in Cabo) and ask them to take you where you'd like to go -- it will end up being about $10 instead. On the positive side, the staff was as friendly as we'd ever seen on a cruise ship. That was a pleasure. And the pool with two slides was fun for the families. And the band Xcite, which performed by the pool, was very good. We would not recommend this cruise, or Norwegian in general.

Difference from HAL by RichardM13

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The freestyle dining was, to our taste, a good thing. Yes, you do not get to know your waiter, but you don't have the regimented feeling. As compared to Holland America, there are lots of small children.

GREAT CRUISE, FINE CREW A REAL GOOD DEAL by VictorZ

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

THIS CRUISE WAS "A" NUMBER 1. THE CREW WAS COMPETENT AND VERY FRIENDLY . ALL OF THE EVENTS WERE DONE WELL. THE RESTAURANTS WERE VERY VERY GOOD. FOOD WAS EXCEPTIONAL. PORTS OF CALL WERE FANTASTIC BUT NOT LONG ENOUGH TO REALLY GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE OR AREA.. WE DID NOT THINK THAT THE SURCHARGE RESTAURANTS WERE WORTH THE TROUBLE. IF I PAY THE SURCHARGE I HAVE TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $25.00 FOR A STEAK OR LOBSTER. THATS NOT MEALS INCLUDED. THE VERSAILLES AND AQUA RESTARANTS WERE VERY VERY GOOD WITH FRIENDLY PERSONEL FROM THE HOSTESSES TO THE WAITERS & WAITRESSES. TRATORRIA NEEDS A RESERVATION AND THAT WAS VERY TASTY. ALL & ALL IT WAS A GREAT CRUISE EXCEPT FOR THE DISEMBARKATION ,TO LONG IN LINES NOT EFFECTIVELY DONE.

Big Cruise -- Small Cost by JanetW12

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was beautiful, although not the prettiest I have ever seen. Still, for the price, it was amazing. Rooms were a little small so that when 2 beds were used, the bar with blow dryer should have been shortened by 6 inches or more so that the other person in the room could get by. Bathrooms were wonderful -- the best I've seen on a ship. Shopping was a disappointment -- not a very friendly staff and not nearly the stock seen on other ships such as more special upscale cruise t-shirts, bathing suits, luggage.

Warm Mexican Rivera Cruise by MicheleN

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

This is our 4th cruise on the Norwegian Star in four years. We go the same time of year in celebration of a family birthday. Things have changes since we started taking this cruise. Not necessarily for the better. We always have a good time regardless.

Not our best cruise! by GregA

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The staff was very nice and helpful. I missed having my own waiter. Freestyle dining meant more stress for us. You had to make reservations to eat anywhere without a wait. The reservations had to be made 2 days before and you had to stay in a long line between 7 am - 10 am. For Thanksgiving dinner we stood in line to sign up for 45 min and ended up with a reservation at 20.30 at night. We normally like to eat dinner at 6 pm. I feel like there was never food when I was ready to eat, it was a hassle and the lines where so long. We normally had a 45 min wait. The food wasn't that good either it was average. It felt that you were encouraged to eat in the surcharge restaurants and even there you needed reservations, the surcharge was anywhere between $ 10.00 and $ 20.00 per person. I want to relax on my vacation and not stress. This was stressful and annoying. was wonderful. We will book all our cruises from now on through . Last time we were upgraded to an Oceanview and this time we recived a complimentory bottle of wine. The travel agent was so proffessional and helpful. Thank you .
