14 days of smooth seas! by jean33

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Transatlantic

The cruise was wonderful. Our captain said that this  was the best of 20 trips that he had made across the Alantic, it was just so smooth all 14 days and nights. We love the Star, it is just a beautiful ship, smaller then other ships that NCL has, but nice. We purchased the speciaity dining package as my husband is diabetic and he could monitor what he ate more carefully. I loved playing in the casino, going to the movies, playing Deal Or No Deal, playing Bingo and just relaxing on our stateroom balcony. We have only sailed on NCL cruise ships and are Platinum members (93 nights total). One thing very important is that all passengers purchase the ship insurance. We continued on the 14 day cruise on with the ship for the Baltic 9 day cruise, on day 16 my husband got Bronchopneumonia and the ships doctor said we must leave the ship and put him in the hospital in Germany!!!!! We had the regular cruise insurance but for a small cost more we could have had the Platinum Insurance. Anyway the insurance took care of 9 nights in the German hospital, my hotel and taxi expenses plus our flight home from Berlin to Seattle. SOOOO GET the Best Insurance for your cruise.

Very nice crew services, excellent food! by Floridian1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Transatlantic

Over all it was a nice experience. At the beggining you feel that there is somethings missings,in comparisson to others cruises, this one was a very quite ship, usually the first day you enter the ship there is celebration, music, drinks, etc. not on this one. May be because there was more older people than youngers.

All the crew members from the top officers to the chefs , waittress, cleaning staff, etc. all where very attentive to the passengers needs, that was something that inpressed me . They all were there to serve you and help you  with a:   Madam or Sir. The food at the restaurants was excellent , that help us also enjoy this cruise. As well as the excellent weather made the journey smooth and pleasant.

Needs more action, Latin Music, the gym is old ( They told us they are going to renovate it all).

At the end we got used to the oldy style and enjoyed it.

NCL improving! by GeorgianaS

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

NCL was very good about accomodating my dietary restrictions. Provided Soy and Almond milk for me. There were several vegan choices at each buffet meal. Market Cafe drab and too industrial looking. No inside area on upper decks to read and be comfortable. My cabin had a bunk bed hanging over one of the twin beds. Always felt it was going to open and land on my head. No information on ports. Passengers were left to figure it all out by themselves.

Money grubbing by TheWayISeeIt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Panama Canal, Central America

This was my second cruise on Norwegien.  On a positive note you have outstanding entertainment and service. I have taken 6 cruises on various ships on other cruise lines.  I was really put off by all the ways the passengers were bombarded by the company to part with their money.  I enjoy playing poker.  The last two cruises I was on with other cruise lines, the cost of the poker tournament was $20.  We had full tables every night and a lot of fun.  You charge $60 to enter your tournament.  You had no takers and a lot of grumbling players that wanted to play, but could not afford it.  Paying for internet is a sad way of making money.  If you simply charged each passenger $10 more, you would have happy customers, and could use the "free internet" as a customer relations feature, and make more money to boot!  Your customers are having to use their shore time to find internet cafes because they cannot afford to spend $.75 a minute.  Going around trying to sell lottery tickets before your theatre shows is tacky and degrading to the crew forced to do it!  Soda from a dispenser is certainly cheaper then coffee or juice, and again, would make your younger travelers happy.  Having water available at the exit is nice, but charging $4.50 a bottle is tacky.  You can buy 24 bottles retail for $3.00.  A good portion of your ship's area is devoted to trying to sell something, instead of providing comfortable lounges, indoor game areas, good sized libraries, etc.(new theater seats on the Star).  The other cruise ships had a 4 page news paper, with different papers in 4 or 5 different languages.  I could read the simple news stories, sports and business news from the USA.  It was really nice.  The English version had one from New York and London.  The NBA playoffs were going on, and all I could get were some obscure soccer games from Europe on TV.  CNN or regular ESPN stations should be on your TV.  You have Fox News and MSNBC, the two most extreme news stations in America.

A good customer service is the key to your profits, by having happy repeat passengers.  We will not be

booking back with Norwegien unless I hear of some big changes.  James and Celia Lettis

Norwegian Star Repositioning Cruise LA - Miami by marganne

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Panama Canal, Central America

I had wanted to traverse the Panama Canal since I was a child, when my grandparents had playing cards showing the canal being built, so this cruise was ideal. Plus it had the added bonus of having 2 more cruises added on afterwards, totalling 38 nights, and I hadn't been to any of the ports other than LA. Initially I was travelling solo but a friend decided to go too and then married friends booked also. The Mexican Riviera was good with a wide range of things and places to visit. Costa Rica - just beautiful and then the Panama Canal transit. This took all day and was incredible - far better than I imagined, with just so much to see. Cartagena was amazing - definitely a place to add to the Bucket List. I didn't want to leave Key West - such an exciting place. I would have loved to be there at night! I had never wanted to visit Miami but I'm so glad I've been there, as it's an amazing city. The best part of this cruise is that I didn't have to leave the ship in Miami! HappyFor more information see individual ports details below.

Food was so so to bad Asian food by Nucben

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Panama Canal, Central America

We have done about  15 cruises, mostly on Princess, first time on NCL, scale of 0-10 rating.

We appreciate the great food service everywhere (9/10), free daily stretch class 9/10

Nightly entertainment 8/10

Cruise fare 9/10, itinerary ports 9/10

General food quality 6/10, Asian food 3/10.  Too frequent Indian food (Chief cook is from India) which does not look attractive and taste poorly.  We are Thai-Chinese and that's what we eat daily, and they are most popular. Noodles sauces of low quality, one time, the chow mein was not cooked!  Guess they were under pressure because of passengers waiting

Service call 1/10: We requested separated beds during reservation but it was not done when the room was announced ready, call Guest service, 2 hours later, went to tell Guest service in person, called again after dinner, then someone came!  Service call for safe deposit box was efficient 8/10

daily service charge of $12 is high compared to Princess of $11:50. It all adds up!

shore excursion interesting but steep price at Costa Rica 5/10

overall, we had good time and overall expense is fair

Norwegian nightmare ...! by Szurav5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

Don't know where to start. This cruise which I took with my two boys (3 and 5 yo) for spring brake turned out to be a pure nightmare. The ship is so old and stinky, especially in buffet areas.

I asked my room to be non smoking and when I came back on the first day in the evening I almost chocked from smock!!! They placed us bellow the casino area . It was a nightmare! My both boys would get staffed noses as soon as they were ready to sleep. On third night one of them developed fever and I called crying and asking to change the rooms. They gave me one inside room, and every night I was dragging everything for sleeping upstairs. Key for that room never worked ( I guess that's why it was available) and I had to knocked to somebody's door and ask to call service people to send somebody to open the door...

ATTENTION!!! KIDS CLUB!!!! It was absolutely horrible( the people were nice) but conditions just unbearable , it was 7 feet by 7 feet room with 20-25 kids from age 3-5!!! And you have to pick them up from 12-2 and 5-7.. so if you wanna have a nice dinner with your hubby- forget about it!!! they really need more staff and be more organized with time and space ! I paid 2400$ to be there ad have little bit time for myself too... Forget about it... When we came home we all got strapped throats, fever and body aches ..  So, if you want to spend your money , spend on something else! Don't go there !!!! DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY ON NIGHTMARE!!! Especially if you have kids!!!

Great Cruise by haroldxxx131

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

A nice ship that is big, but not so big you want to take a cab to get to the other end. Nice facilities, bars, pool, restaurants. Casino was good, but had a poor selection of very tight slots. Some places were hard to find like the star bar on deck 13.

Good cruise; cabin & balcony small. by alberto5697

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was clean and comfortable. The crew, the staff, the food, and the entertainers were quite good. But they skimped on the room and cabin size, and they skimped on the amenities - there wasn't even a pad and pen in the room.

disappointed cruiser by mperrigo1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

we have been on 6 cruises before, so we have other experiences to compare this cruise to. The Norwegian star is in disrepair and needs immediate attention. The spinnaker lounge obviously has had a water leak for awhile. When you first enter the lounge the smell of mold and mildew were choking. The staterooms a/c unit was barely working. we reported it to maintence and supposedly they worked on it. our room was sooo hot that chocolate candy bars we had brought with us stayed in a melted state the entire cruise. there were several areas of the ship that the carpeting was in desperate need of replacement. Overall, a disappointing cruise with Norwegian.

Only a couple mild complaints.Ports weren't great for shopping or anything else unless excursion. LOVED,LOVED, LOVED, AND DID I SAY LOVED THE SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS.I would post pics of it but I can't play the video or the pics I bought.

never again by sukikang

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

the pool was small, the buffet was average, the fine dining was overrated. only good restaurant was the french cuisine and the burgers on the barbecue. we were woken up at 2am from the construction crew who were replacing a large section of carpet. the noise was horrible as it was right above our deck. the ship could of done this when most people were at the port but obvious didnt care. no cruising for us again :(

Worst cruise EVER!!! by boneill1962

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

This was my 12th cruise and the absolute worst experience of cruising ever. Sadly it was a family celebration for my Mom's 80th birthday. I didn't know free style dining meant the other dinning rooms would be terrible. I would have gladly paid the extra on day one to get the service one expects on a cruise.

First time Norwegian Cruiser by lyd779

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Panama Canal, Central America

Clean, friendly staff,,, our rooms was always clean and friendly porter... staff at restuarant areas were very friendly and concerned about cleaning hands and etc. Entertainment was so so... the resturants lacked variety in food presentations. The poolside was very noisy,,, the music far to loud and not the type we cared for...one could not even relax with the noise around and the smoking area by the poolside was not conducive to relaxing... We tried to overlook different things knowing we were not the only people on the ship. A chapel was not available along with a chaplain for a Sunday service.. A big + for many people of different faiths.
