Review summary

Customer service HAS to be looked at on this ship - it is truly lacking at the customer service desk. Our luggage was broken and they did the bare minimum to try to help (only after visiting the desk 3 times daily to get answers). An excursion level should NOT be changed after purchasing one, and it should definitely be appropriately SAFE AND SECURE as NCL states it will be. The excursion to Virgin Gorda/Baths was very unsafe and nothing was completed to our satisfaction.

Embarkation

At Miami Port Embarkation Day: I had wheelchair assistance clearly listed on my account, and I asked at the main counter after checking in where to get help. The staff at the assistance desk told me that there would be no wheelchairs until 11:30 am, our arrival time was 10am. There were others that were needing help and were not given assistance. Asked 4 different employees where to get a wheel chair, no one knew! After we were upstairs, they told us we should have found one DOWNSTAIRS! Tried to send my husband back downstairs to get a wheelchair. No one was able to answer questions about where to find a wheelchair, or help for someone who needed assistance. LACK OF COMMUNICATIONS at Port. Too much walking for someone who needs assistance that was strategically scheduled with Norwegian prior to any cruising. Before embarkation, they kept moving everyone like cattle, from one side of the room to the other, with no reasons at all! Also, our room was not ready until MUCH MUCH later in the day, so there was no way to get to the room to freshen up after a long flight!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Main dining rooms were very nice, specialty restaurants were very nice, buffet is the buffet (could be updated). My specialized diet was in question, but after visiting with the management, Rael was able to make things perfect! I ate like a vegan queen all week!!

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
There was not alot to do on this ship. With only a few pools and a few hot tubs (that were mostly taken over by little kids), there was not much left to do to soak up the sun, but go into port and spend unnecessary money!

Entertainment

The shows were ok. There was not much information given on the shows until that particular day, so we feel we missed out on some great performances!

Children's Programs

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Customer service in general was mostly terrible and a waste of time to talk to. Shore excursions staff was even worse to deal with. Please make sure they handle your luggage appropriately and pay you for the damages! Shore excursion was UNSAFE and was not addressed. The only GREAT service we received was from Rael Benito in the main dining room, Pamela Hernandez (Maitre D') who always knew who we were and addressed us by name, Barbara at Customer Service who always tried to help with the issues we were encountering. Anika Bertrand who tried to help at the end of the trip with wheelchair assistance. Dennon Noderle in customer service who helped with the laundry services stamps since Norwegian declined to allow us our laundry for booking a club suite. John Tio for making our stateroom BEAUTIFUL every day! and Aldrin and John (Bartenders) at the Atrium bar for making our drinks PERFECT EVERYTIME!!

Ship Quality

Areas seemed to be clean and well maintained. The layout was a little confusing at first, but after the 7th day we finally figured it out!

Cabin / Stateroom

Size of this room was NOT very big. When you come into the room, the bathroom is on the immediate left, and then you RUN INTO THE BED before you can enter the rest of the room. This left bruises and marks on both of us trying to get into the room after a long day. The bed should NOT be put in the center of the cabin! The first day on the ship, the balcony door would not open and did not get fixed until late the 2nd night of the cruise. We paid for a balcony for 9 nights, and they didnt care that we didnt get to use our balcony for the first 2. No compensation was given for missing these days of balcony use. Never had channel 12 (safety) in our room, even after discussing it with customer service daily. Channel 12 is the information channel that everyone uses to get off the ship on port days, and without that, we were left to wonder what the process was. We only had a total of 3 channels on our TV the entire time of our cruise, which was never fixed.

Ship tip

If you need help with wheelchair assistance, MAKE SURE someone knows that you do. Having it on your itinerary is a joke.

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

Stayed in Doral for 2 days prior to sailing. Miami was not a favorite, due to traffic congestion.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

THIS PORT WAS AWESOME! We did an excursion to Emotions all inclusive day pass, though it should have been a little longer, it was worth the time spent. A little expensive for what we received during the excursion, but nice to be on the beach. Too many panhandlers on the beach that made it uncomfortable to relax. They were very very pushy!

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda & Baths • Excursion – SAFETY and company – Our excursion was scheduled for Virgin Gorda and Baths, which was originally shown as a level 2 activity level. Upon seeing this had changed at the Shore Excursion desk to a level 3 (which was not possible), we had to change the excursion to the lower lever for substantially more money (Virgin Gorda Escape), but at a lower activity level, Level 1. This was definitely NOT a level 1 activity excursion. - After spending over an hour after being dropped off from the tender in Tortola, BVI, we quietly waited in line for the excursion group to be counted time and time and TIME again. Finally, a ferry showed up, and we waited longer and even longer. There should have been access given to people to sit on the ferry, especially waiting in line for more than 1.5 hrs for the excursion to even begin on the ferry ride. Once we arrived on the other side of the island from the jam packed ferry ride, we were shuttled onto 4 safari style trucks that could hold only 4 people per row, approx. 5 rows each truck. We were all shoved onto these trucks (there were a total of 4 trucks) and awkwardly driven through the poor looking city to get to the “Gorda Escape”. One of the trucks had a flat tire, and another of the trucks was missing all of its lug nuts on each tire. We finally got to the baths and were surprised to find that the driver said “get off” and forced us off of the trucks. The trucks quickly drove away while one guide gave directions on only what time we would be meeting back to go back to the ferry. Looking at the road to get to the Baths was quite a surprise, as it was uneven, broken rocks, wet, slippery, muddy, and dangerous. There were two people on the excursion that mentioned that they could not get to the Baths and it was not described this way and the guides told them that they would have to wait for the group and could not go back until we were all done with the excursion, nor would there be any type of refund. One of them had just had surgery and the other was a girl in a surgical boot. These people would not have signed up for this excursion knowing the dangers of the terrain ahead of time, nor would I have. We helped eachother down the slippery and uneven terrain, making it down to the beach. During this time, the excursion “crew” were selling bottled beers for $5.00 and some sort of homemade mixed alcohol punch out of a cooler for $6.00 per cup. We didn’t know at all what was in the mixed drink, and politely declined. One of the tour guides (a larger black woman, who seemed to be the operator that was counting people as we were getting onto the ferry at the pier), was complaining loudly about all of the people on this and the previous tour – that we were not tipping, we were complaining about the terrain and safety issues, etc. This did not seem very appropriate, especially for the person that was the operator of the group! When our time was done, we very carefully managed to make our way up the battered “walkway” to the meeting area. Every couple and person that made it to the pick up point was stating the same obvious reasons for the problems of this tour. Ready to leave, finally, a truck showed up, then one more, and then another. We noticed we were short a truck to transport people back to the ferry pickup. The black woman operator was yelling and screaming at people to get on the trucks because that was all that was coming to get us. NOT the four trucks, only three. This was not physically possible, without people getting hurt driving back through town safely. We got crammed onto these trucks at 6 people per seat, fearing we might fall off the edge of the trucks! Driven back thru town to the ferry pickup, the “operator” was still screaming at all of us to get on the ferry quickly so that we wouldn’t be late to the ship. After a ride back to the pier, we were dropped off and forced to wait in a long line of people going back to the boat with nowhere to sit and wait for over an hour again! No one was there to help with accessibility issues, and no one cared, once the line was created and we were made to just stand there and wait. - This excursion was labeled a level 1 activity. I don’t believe that for safety issues, this should have been labeled a level 1 activity, nor should it have been charged any more than the original excursion that we signed up for which was $119.00 per person (this one was charged $159.00 per person) - The safety issues included the footpath dangers not able to be walked up or down to get to the actual area. - Another safety issue was the transportation of the trucks. One had a flat tire, one missing all lug nuts and of course the issue of cramming all of the passengers onto the lack of transportation for return. - Problem with the way we were treated – from the moment we were standing in line waiting for the ferry til the moment we were waiting back at the pier, no one was kind, friendly, or even remotely polite. This included not only the excursion team, but the NCL team on the pier that was to be helping with my mobility issues, and asking one to stand in line for the length of time we had to. - ALL of these problems were reported immediately after getting on the Pearl after the excursion to Dale George at the Shore Excursions desk, who said there was nothing he could do. He was very rude and inconsiderate with any information I shared with him and didn’t seem to care too much about the experience. I explained to him that there had to be something done as there were also about 12 couples behind me in line with the same problem from the excursion. I believe that because there were so many people that complained about this, is the only reason that some type of monetary compensation actually happened, though I don’t believe it was enough to make this right. Near the end of our cruise, we were finally offered a $100.00 per person credit for this excursion. I asked for the remainder of the balance to be credited, but nothing was done. THIS NIGHT WAS OUR DINING AT TEPPANYAKI, which had to be cancelled due to the late arrival from the Excursion people and the tendering issues. NCL was in no hurry to help us with rescheduling the dining, and did not assist us in doing so. It was completely left to us to get this part re-figured out.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten Did not visit port

VERY DISAPPOINTED from the previous day and nothing had been done to remedy the situation of the Virgin Gorda Escape Excursion.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

No Excursion - Shopped trying to find a suitcase to fulfil the one that Norwegian Cruise Line broke but would not fix. CANCELED ALL FUTURE EXCURSIONS WITH NORWEGIAN AND OUTSIDE EXCURSION COMPANY due to NCL not fulfilling their promises of safe excursions.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

This is strictly a shopping port only. If you are into shopping for jewelry, t-shirts, hats, and trinkets, this is the place for you to pick up something for someone at home. Nothing exciting here.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas Did not visit port

This port was cancelled at the very last moment and was not appropriately financially taken care of when asked about. Understandably, there are ports that get missed sometimes, but this made the rest of this vacation on this boat the last straw of negative. We were ready to just go home immediately as we had made plans in GSC to see family.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
After finally finding someone to help with my disembarkation wheelchair help, this was a decent experience in that I was helped off of the ship and brought to my luggage. I was thankful for this, as the trip was very exhausting not having this type of support at all until disembarkation.
