Review summary

Great trip to experience a taste of Alaska, felt gouged on price, service fees, gratuities, etc., not enough parent & toddler programs available. Too much time spent on ship where there is nothing to do except for paid activities, eat & drink. Don't need to do again.

Embarkation

Even though we had an early assigned time, we boarded with about 2000 other people, boarded late, and had to wait in a large waiting room full of 2000 people for a while. Kind of defeated the purpose of arriving early.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Enjoyed the specialty restaurants and the buffets. Made eating with a toddler easy. Great service in restaurants - except for Steakhouse - waited a long time for food to arrive. Favorite restaurant was Teppanyaki. We had beverage package and 3 night special restaurant package.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Husband played in poker tournaments. I did Deal or No Deal and Bingo. All required entry fees. Gambling was fun. We both won $ which helped offset the fees we owed before exiting the ship.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
We saw one good show with MJ, Madonna and Elvis impersonators - great dancing and singing!

Children's Programs

Not much geared towards toddlers - which is a shame! There were many traveling families on board and since the ship is a "floating hotel" the trip appeals to those with toddlers. There was a toddler playroom with a 1/2 hour allocated in the morning and night with "special music, toys & bubble machine" but it wasn't that great. Toddler playroom is small, and kiddie splash pool outside was too cold to use! Also, no diaper changing allowed in or near playroom - changing room is located on other side of ship!

Cabin was tight - we were thankful to have the balcony!

Ship tip

Be very careful about hidden fees, even if you purchase "all inclusive packages"

Weather didn't cooperate so no helicopter tour, but loved visiting Medenhall glacier and falls on our own!

Skagway, Alaska

4 out of 5
We had a planned dog sled excursion here - great with toddler. Time was 3.25 hours - booked directly through Alaska Excursions - not through cruise line! Downtown Skagway has some historical buildings which are interesting - it's a touristy town full of lame jewelry shops - had to really hunt for a drug store!

Ketchikan, Alaska

It rained while we were there - not much to do - we took a van tour through town but it wasn't that great.

Victoria, British Columbia

Loved Butchart Gardens - other than glaciers in Alaska, biggest WOW! factor on trip. Really lovely evening - wish we had more time to spend there!

I went in this cruise. I can’t imaging taking a toddler on this type of cruise!!! Doesn’t make sense to me- just my opinion!

Just got off the Pearl! Wonderful trip! Nothing negative to say. Loved the freestyle dining and casual atmosphere. Alaska was breathtaking!!
