Review summary

The cruise itself was great. The tours we took at ports were great. The only concern we had was on Thursday we were informed that there was a $13.50 charge per day, per passenger as a gratuity for the room stewards and the food staff. I don't have a problem with the charge because they deserved it. The problem we had was we were not informed of this before we left. The additional charge of $183 was a shock. On our past cruises, the charge was as low a $5.00. I believe should have informed us of this.

on carnival we wait about 2 days and then have it removed. but I was told they won't charge me and I could just tip as I want. and was even told I could fight the gratuity charge on some drinks if the serves is slow

I was told I didn't have to pay it when we booked. so I didn't pay it

As Yuk said, you CAN'T opt out on NCL as of November 2015. You have to pay, then get a refund request form from guest services or online. But glad you had a good cruise otherwise.

They normally add the service charge automatically, you can opt - out by requesting the this the day you board the ship. They don't like it, but it's your right, you can reward them according to their service.

The total charge us listed on the website giving the total if you want to pay ahead of time

On the Norwegian you can't opt out. You have to pay. After you get home, you can request to have your money refunded to you within the first 30 days. I'm not sure about other cruise lines but that's how it was last month on the NCL.

You can sometimes pay this in advance and then reward cabin stewards extra.

This 'gratuity charge' is standard across all cruise liners, but you can opt-out and choose to reward them individually.
