Family Vacation on the Norwegian Getaway by nokeefe60

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Service was excellent, food was delicious.  The activities were wonderful, and the shows, especially Comedy Show was fantastic.  Only downfall, was one adult pool for so many adults.  The adult pool was very crowded. Our inside stateroom could have used some drawers or more areas to put our clothes.  Overall, we very much enjoyed our cruise and the ports were very nice, especially Costa Maya!

Solo Traveling on NCL by docronps

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The 4500 passengers on the NCL Getaway did not get in the way of having a good time and access to most activities.  At dinner time, some advanced planning needs to occur as for the complimentary restaurants.  Prime time for dining can find you waiting no more than 20 minutes.  I would suggest trying out Taste or Savor for more quiet dining. And to avoid the masses in the Garden Buffet, these restaurants are open for breakfast and occasionally lunch.

NCL tries to assist the solo traveler and those in the LGBT community an opportunity to meet in the evenings.  Depending on the group, you can usually find yourself with others with whom to dine.  Unfortunately, the solo cabin passengers never get in the solo lounge.  Apparently, unlike on the Epic, this lounge would not especially welcoming as a meeting spot.  I think NCL should rethink this area and copy the success of the Epic. I applaud NCL is recognizing that the LGBT community has money to travel and not all prefer to spend the cruising vacation on a Gay cruise.  The health club was not the especially large size as found on the Epic. Poor design caused the workout area to be very tight and trying to avoid others proved difficult at prime workout times. The pool area was adequate but to be avoided during sea days. If you can hold off on taking a day trip at every port, spend a day enjoying many of the activities poolside. The water slide and ropes course are especially fun as less crowded on port days.  The Spa runs specials and if they don't, just ask them for one.  They will try to sell you many of their products convincing you that your skin needs extra care provided by their brand of creams, etc.

I would travel on NCL in the future as I like the Freestyle Dining and attention to various groups whether LGBT or solo travelers.

After 15 cruises, we were disappointed with one by norma1142123258

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Most disappointed in our $200 cruise credit "given" to us by . We were never told we had to jump through hoops to receive something we were "given". The cruise ship was beautiful but in this case you got what you paid for. We chose Specialty Dining and pre-paid our gratuities. When we went to the restaurants, most of the nicer meals had an "up-charge". So you paid to eat at the restaurants and then had to pay more for the better meals. All of the restaurants on board required a reservation in advance, even the free ones. I have a hard time knowing what I am doing the next day while on vacation, much less five to six days in advance. Not happy that most of the good shows also had a charge. We called it the "Up-charge cruise", felt like we were nickle and dimed throughout the trip. We also thought the daily per day, per person mandatory charge was excessive. Ahhhh, to remember the good ole days of cruising. We had wanted to book our next cruise while on board, but had to reconsider sailing on Norwegian and we will also be reconsidering booking through .

Nice ship for a first time cruiser, but not for those who know better... by nepheline

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Argumentative staff, constant nickel & dime-ing, and par food at best. We went on NCL because it was a great line for "foodies" like me. I couldn't be more wrong. There were highlights, but they were few & far between.

The embarkation/disembarkation was a NIGHTMARE. The rooms had little a/c and took 2 1/2 hours from our arrival time to set foot on the ship. Very disorganized.

We were spoiled by Disney Cruise Line, so any future cruises will be through them. This is our first and last cruise through NCL.

Not bad by klrec42

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I think the thing that held us back was bringing a 1 year old and no child care for him. So it was difficult for my husband and I to relax. But we had some really fun experiences and good adventures.

Ship is great; ports are a bit uninspiring by kareyr123

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The Norwegian Getaway is a pretty ship and the crew is friendly and helpful for the most part. I was upgraded to a mini suite with a large balcony, which included 2 regular chairs, 2 lounge chairs, a table, and ample room. They don't give you a map of what's on board, which is crazy given the size of the ship. The "freestyle" label is apt; you can pretty much eat whenever you want and do whatever you want (or nothing). The food was good, but there isn't much variety unless you pay extra (from $20+) for "specialty" restaurants. The free shows are fine; again, you can pay for the premium entertainment. I recommend paying the extra $99 for access to the Vibe Beach Club (open 7-7 daily), where you can always get a chair and bartenders tend to your every wish. This is an especially good alternative if you don't want to get off the ship at some/all of the ports. The ports are pretty boring and seem to exist only for the purpose of selling cheap goods to tourists (with the exception of Cozumel, where there is more to do). I recommend the Xcaret Park tour, but it takes about 2 hours to get from the ship to the park, which doesn't leave much time to explore the huge, beautiful place (because you also need to allow for about 2 hours to get back to the ship). In the end, maybe it wasn't worth the hassle. I would give this cruise 3 and a half stars (instead of 4) if that were an option.

Service was great, lots of activities to do on the ship. Entertainment was good also. by randyolson5673

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

we were celebrating our wedding anniversary on this cruise and had a great time. Overall the food was good although the last night we had New York Strip steaks and they were tough. I was disappointed to find out that the $200 of credit for excursions was $50 per port. I was told I could $200 on ant port by the agent that we booked with.

Incredible Experience by barden1981

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We loved the whole trip!  Our favorite part was the Mojito Bar, Susan was a delight.  We were really impressed with the unlimited drink package and the continued perfectly poured drinks throughout the entire week.

The only thing we could think of that could use some improvement was the Illusionarium show.  We attended and service was sub par, especially for those that had dietary restrictions.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories, we intend on joining Norwegian again soon!

Improvement: getting on the ship needs to be more pleasant and comfortable favorite: food and plethora of activities. We heard that NCL has best food compared to several other cruise lines so we're sticking with NCL

Cruise on the ship was GREAT!! First 2 Port destination was very disappointing. by Planformelj

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Our favorite part was everything on the ship itself. Our room was great, the entertainment was Awesome, the food was Fabulous at all the restaurants and the sailing was Excellent. However, Rotan, Honduras and Belize City, Belize was a huge disappointment. What you see on the "Feed the Kids" or "Help the Animals" commercials we didn't want to see that when we spend over $2,500 on a vacation. We were so disappointed we didn't get off the ship at Costa Maya as we couldn't take another let down!!  We did enjoy Conzumel as we even found the resort we want to stay at when we return for a week long vacation in a few months.

Please note: the locals we meet in Rotan were super nice and friendly.

We will continue to cruise with Norwegian as we have never had any problems with them. We J ust would NEVER visit those islands again!!!

Norwegian Getaway Western Caribbean by ddbarone

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Amazingly well organized cruise for such a large number of passengers.  Good food, good service, great shows!  Tours were okay.  Mayan ruins tour in Costa Maya was excellent.  Atlantis submarine tour in Cozumel was a disappointment due to the lack of fish in the water, only a few schools of small fish.

Western Caribbean Cruise by lbarleecomcastnet

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was a great cruise!  We had a good time as well as getting in a little relaxation here and there.  Especially interesting are the stops at different ports and getting to check them out and see how the locals live.  We especially enjoyed the freestyle dinner dining as well as the Garden Café for quick meals.

Our travel agent was great!  She was able to give us good ideas on things to do and was always eager to answer any questions we might have.

If only we could find some peace and quiet by dick81815333

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I am physically challenged and have used a mobility scooter for over 20 years on cruises.  This ship was the best fitted ship we have come across in about 30 cruises.  Every door was easy to open, even our stateroom door.  Congratulations to Norwegian.  The corridors were a bit narrow, especially with the stewards carts in the hallways almost all day long, but we were able to manage.

The food was excellent all all of restaurants that we went to along with the buffet. No bad meals.  Pastry was not great, but was good.  Service was excellent.

Our only complaint was the constant loud noise level, pounding music coming up through the Atrium even into our room on the 10th deck all day and late into the night.  the Library was foolishly located right behind the Atrium stage area where much of the entertainment took place.  There was some quiet on the Promenade deck if you got there early enough to get one of the few available seats.  There was quiet on deck 16 but intense sun all day long.  With a little luck you could get a little shade up there late in the day.  We like to veg out and read, even take a nap during a cruise.  We couldn't nap due to the noise in the room.  Finding a place to read was a challenge.  Sometimes we got a place outside the Savour Restaurant.  By the way, the Waterfront restaurants are fun if you can tolerate the smokers.

Also, with the Casino located in an Atrium, an open area of the ship, the smoke just floats throughout a large area of this beautifully designed ship.  We are avid non-smokers and could only walk through the 8th floor Promenade on the non-smoking side to traverse the ship to avoid heavy smoke.

Fall Norwegain Getaway crusie by SparkleKelly

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group

I love traveling on the Norwegian Ships. They have free style dining, multiple entertainment options, loved the beverage package, and the most part having lots of cruisers on the ship didn't interfere with my plans.

Great ship, fun time had by all by ebuckstad248

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship was beautiful and never seemed crowded.  Food, drink and entertainment were excellent.  The biggest frustration was the service in the upscale dining.  It would take a very long time to get drinks and to get the bill.  The bill were useless as we had the dining package.

Norwegian Getaway by mabauer1950

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Crew, service, food all great. Disaster trying to get off ship. Little to no advance directions. Count on waiting in line for at least an hour to get off. After getting off, they put the luggage in the wrong place and had to wait until everyone on the ship got off before it could be cleared by customs and retrieved.

Getaway by carolannridgely

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship is beautiful and very clean. I objected to them  taking away the Flamingo Dinner and not yet opening Margaritaville! They keep taking away complimentary restaurants and adding more that you have to pay extra for! Also, items that used to be "free" in the dining rooms, lobster, prime rib, etc. now have a $25.00 service charge! This all adds a lot more to your cruise price! The buffet was just average! Was disappointed in the buffet!
