We enjoyed our first Norwegian cruise and would cruise with them again. We enjoyed the ability to dine whenever you wanted and dress up or not dress up (your choice).
Norwegian Getaway Cruise Review to Caribbean - Western
We enjoyed our first Norwegian cruise. We especially like being able to dine whenever we wanted and having the choice to dress up, or not dress up.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
We had to wait quite a while in the terminal before the boarding began. Once the process began it went rather smoothly.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
The main dining rooms had good food. The food at the specialty restaurant Cagney's was excellent. We don't usually eat at the buffets because of everyone handling the serving utensils but due to the current situation with the Coronavirus, Norwegian did an excellent job of preventing the spread of viruses. The staff handed everyone their plates, napkins and utensils and served us our food and drinks while wearing gloves. We enjoyed several meals in the buffet on this cruise.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
We enjoyed the ropes course, water slides, and mini golf, there was plenty to do.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
We did enjoy the comedy show, I just wish there had been an earlier show. Escape the big top was crowded and chaotic, it wasn't what we were expecting. We did enjoy the music in the Tropicana dining room while having dinner.
Children's Programs
Our children were with us but are young adults.
Service and Staff
1 out of 5
The service was great and everyone was very friendly. Our son has to eat a gluten free diet, and we were very impressed with how the staff handled it. We had to wait longer for his meals but that is completely understandable. Norwegian does an excellent handling food allergies.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
Everything was clean, although there was a mold/mildew smell at one end of the 5th floor by the elevators.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Our room was a good size, the bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. We liked having the large sink and tub/shower combination in our bathroom.
We went to Mr. Sancho's and thoroughly enjoyed our day. The staff was so friendly and attentive. We were able to do some snorkeling right off the beach and saw some beautiful fish.
We were not impressed. We did not do an excursion, the wind was so bad that all water activities were canceled. They have a pool you can use in the port but you have to spend a certain amount of money on food and drinks to get a lounge chair. We were looking forward to shopping in the port, but the quality of the products were poor.
It wasn't anything the ship could control but we were 3 hours late getting back to port due to bad weather. Once we arrived we still had to wait a long time for the New Orleans authorities to let us off the ship. Luckily for us, we drove but I'm sure it was very stressful for those that were catching a flight. When we do fly we always make our flight home for later in the day and this experience confirmed for us that it is very wise to book a later flight. We were supposed to arrive at 7 AM in NOLA and we didn't arrive until 10AM, 11:30 before we were off the ship.
