Review summary

My nephew (severe autism) ran from his room and his parents couldn’t find him. Reported to guest services for help-the person at guest services was very helpful, but the security (4 of them) acted as if they had no clue how to do their job and were completely unorganized, asking the same questions numerous times. I finally stepped in and organized everyone and sent people to specific places and my nephew was found by his mommy. Terrible security personnel, just awful. Shocked the the US allows this company to operate out of their ports. Their “customs” process is seconds long-nothing checked at ports, and disembarkation was no different. Pretty much if you looked like a decent family or person they opened your passport and said thank you and you left the area. There is no telling what is brought into the USA on a regular basis judging by NCL’s lax security. I was shocked.

Food and Dining

Garden Café

4 out of 5

Section was decent. I expected much more fresh fruit offerings. Very annoying that they allow things to run out the last half hour they are open since hundreds of people are still trying to eat. The bartender outside, in front of the cafe, is hands down the best bartender on the ship. The staff running the cafe are ‘hit and miss’...most are friendly but some might be better working away from guests.

Taste Restaurant

2 out of 5

If you read reviews stating to go there to have breakfast or something different.....all they do is take your order and have it brought down from the garden cafe. It’s nice to do if you want to wait for your food (half hour or longer) in a nicer restaurant setting, but if you are led to believe it is better or different food than at the buffet, it is not. They bring it down into the servers vestibule with a food cover over it, the waitress/waiter removes the food cover and sets it on a tray for delivery to your table. (We were seated where we could watch them). The staff in the restaurant was very nice. The restaurant was very loud, no different than the buffet in noise level.

Prime Meridian Bar

Not any better than the buffet-don’t waste your money.

Onboard Activities

Pool

1 out of 5

I wouldn’t call any of their pools an actual pool. The adult area is basically a place to sit with your bottom in the water with a very small area in the middle of the surrounding sitting pool area, about shoulder high, to walk around in. Don’t plan on actually swimming-the pools are not designed for that. They are social setting pools only. The family/kids pool on the other side smells of feces. It was a terrible scent. Not sure if they just don’t change the water often enough or if they have issues with their chemicals. The smell was terrible and clung to shoes and bathing suits. The pools are very small and the photos on the website are deceptive.

Bungee Trampoline

4 out of 5

My son loved it. The only reasons it isn’t five stars is due to very short hours of operation and only small children (under 48 inches) can utilize the trampoline.

Splash Academy

4 out of 5

My kids loved this club when they went (they only wanted to attend in the evenings). They had a blast there! Not five stars because of the disorganization on the first few days trying to check in and check out my children. They had people registering at all times of the day, although we were all told to register the first day, so lines to pick up children were very long, many times it would take a half hour just to pick up my children. This long process continued the entire week, due to more and more families utilizing the academy, but NCL failed to have enough staff available to check in and check out children.....for those who use a daycare, it’s reminiscent of the first couple days after enrolling your child in an after school daycare....they are lacking the skills to control the crowd of parents.

Kids Area

4 out of 5

Only reason not a five star is due to the very short hours of some of the kids areas and the lack of space in the kids/Family pool area.

Kids' Aqua Park

3 out of 5

Toddler area is not directly supervised by a lifeguard. Children much too old to play in the area are not asked to leave nor does the lifeguard intervene when they are causing issues. Parents watch their children while trying to chat with others and enjoy their time, but due to the small area and the large amount of children of all ages, fights between children had to be regularly broken up. It’s a great area for young ones, but there is so little for the kids on the ship to do that the area gets overcrowded. If NCL would keep the other areas open all day (ropes/climbing wall/web with slide/trampoline/etc) it would greatly reduce older kid traffic in this area.

Service and Staff

Ship Quality

The layout was very ‘choppy’. It was difficult to get around and very difficult to enjoy anything on the swim deck due to lack of supervision by staff in the toddler area and a smell of feces in the center pool area on the Family side. The public restrooms smelled strongly of urine, and should be reported to the health department.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
The cabin was laid out well with a good use of space. The cabin was NOT clean-hair in the bathroom and on the towels, hair on the sheets, carpet hadn’t been vacuumed. Room steward put the cup covers over a cup one of us used on the first day (still having water inside) which sickened me as I now knew the glasses were not cleaned between guests. The ice container didn’t have sanitary bags which also was disturbing since we knew the room hadn’t been cleaned properly. One of the days our steward folded a towel, left on the floor (as directed when needed replaced) and rehung as if it were clean. The glass on the balcony (barrier to the ocean under the wooden banister) was foggy and had build up which made it difficult for my six year old to see out, consequently encouraged him to climb on chairs, which made for much anxiety through the entire trip. Room steward stole my son’s medication cup and promised to replace ASAP-I had to replace after the second day of him not bringing since son’s medication is difficult to mix in normal cup and leaves medication residue which must be wiped out (dishwashers cannot clean it).

Ship tip

NOT kid friendly; bring LOTS of cleaning materials, own towels and own bedding....or you might be sleeping and drying off with something used by the prior guest and not washed.

If a child has autism I would think cruising would be too much sensory overload. It is a lot to take in for anyone but I would not have put him in this type of situation!

Ncl has no control over customs; they are a government agency.

I guess you won't be crusing again.

Once again you complain too much. The kid's parents should watch him better if he had issues.

The second I read he "stole the kids medication cup" I should have stopped reading. That pretty much tells us your mind set. Do you think he really "stole" it so he can ship it back home? Tossed it by accident would be the first thing I would think of. No ship would have a chance with you.

Glad he was found safe.
