Review summary

I have been on many cruises & I felt very disappointed on this cruise!  They downgraded this ship!  We had a mini-suite & it was so small with the smallest balcony I ever had. The cabin doors opened into the halls so you had to be careful not to bump into people walking!  Not much closet space. What they called an atrium was not the least bit impressive.  Ship services were in the same area & it made it difficult to hear when speaking at the desk. Computer services on opposite side of the same area. No grand stairway or glass elevators going up to decks 8 or 9. Pool areas were very bland. Entertainment was not up to par; no shows in the theatre & you had to pay extra for some entertainment!  I would never book this ship again. Now they are coming out with 2 larger ships which may also be along these lines!  They seem to be catering to the masses not ambiance!

It really depends on your expectations. We have been on cruise before and we were satisfied with the inside stateroom since we just mainly lay down and rest inside the room. We were initially booked for an inside stateroom for 4 people on the getaway, but my wife was able to upgrade to balcony for $240 ( $60/person) 2 days prior to our trip. Balcony is more spacious to us compared to prior inside stateroom and we were happy

We had a great time on the getaway food shows and winning 1500 in casino wasn't bad either but the Norwegian gem not so much to New England I too had issues with service dear being in the atrium with there big screen can't talk business with service agents we jus booked with royal Caribbean to see how they roll the harmony of the seas

Compared to the others we have sailed on, the Getaway is certainly the most modern and does not have the "cruise citch" decor. We loved it!! The doors opening into the hallways were an adjustment but we loved the buttons for "do not disturb" and "please make up my stateroom". Closet space was slightly less but we still had plenty. We LOVED the Waterfront concept and the layout of the buffet as there never seemed to be large bottlenecks or congestion anywhere. The ship was also absolutely immaculate, probably the cleanest we've ever been on. I agree that you need to do your research on the ship's layout and amenities prior to booking to make sure that it will fit your tastes and needs.

Kfenton66--agree totally! I really don't understand how someone can even say anything bad about this ship, but as I always say, a cruise review is subjective--great to one person, and bad to another--both sailing the same ship and dates!

The Getaway was FABULOUS when I sailed it in January, and I've had plenty of other ships to compare it to. Martinmanorsurplus--I agree totally. RESEARCH PEOPLE! I know ahead what I'm getting into! I knew when I booked a Royal cruise my cabin would be smaller than on Carnival and knew my NCL Getaway cabin would be even smaller! But no problem. The Getaway was one of the BEST ships I've sailed! So much so, we booked again for this January with 18 family members! O'Sheehan's is absolutely wonderful! And their buffet is the best at sea! The entertainment was top notch, also! I do know the Getaway has been receiving bad reviews on its Baltic itineraries, but it's the best in the Caribbean!! Can't wait for January! As for the poster, a cruise review is subjective. A bad cruise to one person, may be great to another! I tell people to pay no attention to bad reviews, and do your own research. You will be a lot happier.

Don't understand the "no shows in the theatre" comment. The Getaway has one of the best shows I have seen at sea so far - Million Dollar Quartet and Burn the Floor was really good also. There is also the glass stairway mid ship.

if you are looking for "grand staircases" and "ambiance" NCL is not the cruise line for you. their thing is casual "freestyle" cruising. You should try MSC, the Divina is the most beautiful ship I've ever been on, with Sworovski crystal staircases. The rooms were on the larger side as well. Different shows every night, with some really amazing singers.

How many days was your cruise? Ive read many mixed reviews on the Getaway.. but also on most all cruise ships. I think far too many people don't do their research nor manage their expectations... so its a crap-shoot if they will be disappointed or not. Simple research shows NCL has some of the smallest rooms and balconies in the business. Simple research shows deck layouts, video walk throughs of the ships, entertainment schedules, dining options, etc. Sounds like you went into this cruise totally blind and had unrealistic expectations... Research people... Research and KNOW what your getting into. HAPPY CRUISING TO ALL!! btw... I'll be on the Getaway in 105 days for the Transatlantic 14 day cruise... balcony room. Knowing they are small but manageable.. knowing the deck plans, and where things are in relation to the ship and my cabin... what dining options I have, and menu choices.... It will be another GREAT CRUISE!!! 😀

I am sorry you had such disappointment. I loved the Getaway. I often felt like I was walking in Italy as I walked the ship. The gem was my first ship and I loved her also. what has been your favorite ships?
