Review summary

Without a doubt, staying in the Haven Suites made our trip superb.  The service was impeccable and the food served in the private dining room was five star quality at every meal.  We ventured out into the other eating venues a few times, but always returned to the Haven. Unfortunately the weather did not permit use of the pool.  This was my first Norwegian experience and I have to say that there were many bumps in the road. Not getting into two main ports without real explanations was disappointing, to say the least. In the port of Brest France, people were lined up for city blocks waiting to get back on the ship.  Only one plank/platform was down and there was an incredible amount of hostile passengers who were yelling at the passengers getting off tour busses telling them to go to the back of the line.  I saw the worst behavior ever from passengers and it was very disturbing. We chose to shop at the amazing tents set up on the pier and enjoyed the best bottle of French wine we have ever had. The shore excursions were very good and we were fortunate to have excellent guides on each one.  The Norwegian Getaway was the largest ship I have ever been on and I think that without the Haven experience, we would be giving a different review.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food in the Haven Dining Room was superb.

Onboard Activities

Just OK. The best was the paint class. Bingo - not good. Room too dark and the people conducting were hard to understand (Fat Cats). Too many people to enjoy anything.

Entertainment

The dancers were fabulous, comedy club -funny. I was disappointed overall however.

Children's Programs

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
I can't remember names but our butler, John, and housekeeper, June, concierge John, all of the waiters in the Haven were outstanding. They were always polite and engaging and made our trip very enjoyable.

Ship Quality

Beautiful ship and the cleanliness of the public bathrooms was excellent. For a ship of its size, the layout was amazing and easy to get around in.

Cabin / Stateroom

The best! It made our trip enjoyable. There were four single women staying in this suite and it was perfect. The bathroom with windows open to the ocean was breathtaking. Fun to shower and look out at the sea. Butler service excellent as was all provided by the Haven staff.

Ship tip

Spend the money. Book the Haven!

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

5 out of 5
Not enough time there to comment. Florida is a trip on its own.

Ponta Delgada, Azores

We never got there except to look at it from afar. No real explanation for not going there. I have been twice before with other ships and never had a problem. The claim that the weather prevented it was not believable. Sorry. I have experienced waves in South America crossing Drakes Passage and so I know what waves are.

Brest, France

5 out of 5
Enjoyable tour. Apparently not much for passengers to do who did not book tours because they were lined up for city blocks to get back on the ship very early and caused a lot of trouble.

Southampton (London), England

5 out of 5
We loved the London on land and water tour. Our guide was the best. I have been to London several times, but for the rest of our group this tour gave them a good overview. Wish we had had more time there.

Zeebrugge (Bruges), Belgium

Never got there. Port was cancelled with no plausible explanation. Very poor on Norwegian's part. I haven't been there in 50 years so it was very disappointing to have it cancelled.

Rotterdam, Netherlands

5 out of 5
Beautiful port and city. We chose a tour in Amsterdam, but knowing how beautiful Rotterdam is, we would have stayed and seen more of it.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Loved Copenhagen. Have been before while taking the Baltic Cruise. Beautiful place. Wonderful people.

Glad to hear SOMEONE had a good time on that cruise!! I've read so many complaints about the problems encountered on that one sailing, it was getting me worried! I sailed the Getaway in January and am heading back on her this coming January. Sometimes it is all in expectations vs reality. I just love cruising, and have yet to consider any ship bad. There may be a few hiccups, but all in all, cruising any ship is better than not cruising at all.
