Review summary
Brest was truly a royal screw up. This was foreseeable. The port lack facilities for a large cruise ship. Any sailor should no how to check a tide table. Tidal changes required a single gangway for return to the ship. The two hour wait in line to return to the ship was such a novelty that a number of the crew were up videoing the line as it rapped around the front of the ship. There were plenty of crew watching from the ship but none ventured out from the gangway to check on the old folks.
While you cannot blame the Getaway for British immigration delays the problems were compounded by negligent planning. The ship put out a schedule for the inspections that required five hours. Knowing how long it would take they kept calling groups as the line wait grew. Knowing that many older guest were ill equipped to stand in a long line they disregarded the welfare of the passengers and told them to go stand in a line out on deck with no chairs for one and a half hours. One older gentleman near me looked like he was ready to collapse. While standing out on the deck for an hour we never saw a crew member checking on the health of the passengers. One can only conclude that after two days of long lines and crew indifference to the people in the line that the safety of the passengers was not a priority.
