Review summary

We have cruised on Disney, Royal Caribbean and Holland America. I would have to rate NCL below them. The ship and staff are fine, but it had a feel that NCL was cutting expenses in the areas that made cruising feel special. My wife and I had a good 20th anniversary cruise, but I may have to avoid NCL in the future.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Would have been a 5 if NCL had not eliminated small "luxuries" like pillow chocolates or lobster available on menu in dining halls.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Steward was superior (Johnathan). Waiters had too many tables to attend. Waits were long to get dinner started. Even though we arrived early, we were often not able to make the early show.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Nice ship but starting to show its age. Wireless was worthless.

Cabin / Stateroom

Ship tip

If you are a seasoned cruiser (we are, but this is our first NCL cruise), lower your expectations.

On RCL Anthem you don't get chocolates on your pillows. It's not only NCL getting rid of lobster.

Many cruise lines/ships have dropped lobster; most cruise ship WiFi is limited; Gem is only 11 years old and refurbished 3 years ago. So I don’t find much value in the comparison. 😁
