Review summary

We go on cruises for the destinations not the ship. We had a great time on the destinations and enjoyed our time as a family. Nothing brings a family closer than spending 11 days in a small space. All in all we will go again just maybe try another cruise line.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
The ship came in late so there were huge line ups they could of used more staff but your on vacation so it did not matter too much.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
We have been on the Gem 3 times and each time the quality of food has gone down. I think that they need to find some better chefs most of the items we all over cooked and don't do the scrambled eggs as they are never cooked through.

Garden Café

2 out of 5

Buffet what can you expect. Food is usually over cooked and cold. We tend to go for snacks there and to grad toast that you can do yourself in the am.

Grand Pacific Main Dining Room

3 out of 5

Food is usually pretty good in the main dining lounge.

Le Bistro

1 out of 5

Was one of our favorites and unfortunately they have fallen way below expectations.

Cagney's Steakhouse

4 out of 5

One of our favorite places. The food here has always been consistently great. Note if you like your meat Medium Rare, order it Rare and it will be perfect.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
The onboard activities are geared to the party enthusiast or drinkers. It is also the same old tired thing. Found that there is a lack of imagination of activities they can do that will be great for everyone.

Tahitian Pool

3 out of 5

Closed for all but one day.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The entertainment is ok. Some of it would be great if it was not the same routine. We saw all of the acts except for one when we were on board 2 years ago. I would like to see them change things up a bit. Or atleast the acts that are on change up their routine a bit. Most were word for word the show that was on 2 years ago.

Children's Programs

2 out of 5
My kids were not excited to go to this and ended up only going once.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
The majority of the staff go out of their way for you.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ship is always clean. They could use better paper roll dispencers in the bathrooms they do not turn well and there ends up being a lot of paper on the floor all the time.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
The cabin was clean. They feel like they are getting smaller and smaller. The bathrooms could use an update and the walls and ceilings could use extra sound proffing.

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

This was where we began and ended so no time to visit

Basseterre, St. Kitts

4 out of 5
This port was nice. We did our own thing jumped on a local bus that took us to the fortress. Great views from here. Then we did some shopping all I have to say is there are far too many jewlery stores in all the ports.

Castries, St. Lucia

We took the land and sea tour and the tour was good however the tour was late leaving (over an hour late of standing around) so we ended up rushing the second half of the tour and not getting any time to check out the down town area as they had to hold the tender boats for us. The boat ride was laid back however the bus tour and visit to the falls was rush, rush.

Bridgetown, Barbados

We did our own thing again and headed to the beach for half of the day. Then we went downtown for a while. The area thar is to have a lot of local artists was practically empty and would of liked to of seen more culture. They are just not set up very well yet, not one giving directions or giving out local maps etc to hightlight some of the areas that would of been nice to see.

Fort-De-France, Martinique

4 out of 5
Half of a day is just not enough. Arrived at 7am but nothing is open until 9 and when you have to be back on board in a couple hours it does not leave a lot of time. Wished it was a whole day as there was so much more we would of like to of done. We did get to the Library, Church, Craft Market, Fort Louis as well. The tour of the fort is interesting however you don't actually get to see the fort. Just a few levels and a room where they use to keep the ammunition. Views are great but because itis an active installation the tour is limited. Save your time and check out other stuff around the area you won't be disappointed in this island.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

A long walk to get to downtown from the Port. And yet another half a day I would of rathered given this day up for a full day in Martinique. We just did some shopping as we have been to this island before. We tried to find some off the beaten path things as again you are surounded by jewlery stores.

Disembarkation

This is the absolute worste part of the whold trip. There is no organization. We were walk offs with lots of luggage and no where to go since you were required to be out of your cabins by 8:30 am. It would be better if they allowed the walk off people to stay in their cabins longer as to not be blocking the halls with their bags. We could not find somewhere to sit and stood for 2 hrs before we started to disembark. We were near the beginning of the line and it still took 45 min to get off the ship. There was only one person from the crew there to try and keep order with all these people where they needed a lot more. There are many ways that this could of been done better.
