Review summary

We were really looking forward to this cruise because of the itinerary and convenience of the port near our home. One day before departure, we received a notice that we would not be going to their private island (Great Stirrup Cay) and would go straight to Nassau for propulsion system repairs. Apparently the ship has been doing this for a couple cruises before ours and are still doing this for the upcoming cruises.  It would have been nice to get notice of this earlier so we could plan accordingly and maybe even transfer to another cruise.  We received a $50 onboard credit per cabin.  I guess NCL thinks that their island stop is only worth $50, it should have been per person. We really wanted to go to their island because we read a ton of reviews that it was the best stop on the cruise and had planned paddle boarding and snorkeling a shipwreck.

The first two days down the Atlantic were terrible with high winds and the ocean was very rough.  We couldn't even go out on deck to read a book or enjoy other outdoor activities. Port Canaveral was a good stop for us because we went to Epcot and enjoyed the Flower & Garden Festival.  I wish we had more time at this port and less at Nassau. We did get an extra half day in Nassau because of skipping their private island and did a kayak excursion which was okay.  The second Nassau day we went to Atlantis and really enjoyed that.  We did not book through ship, way too expensive. The last two days sailing back was better, but still windy.  I think I was able to enjoy 4 hours total out on the deck. Of course there were plenty of people out on deck tanning, but I just wanted to read and the wind made it hard to do this.

The activities were just ok.  They had plenty of trivia and bingo games.  The cost of the bingo games were outrageous, $39 for 3 cards, $49 for 6 cards and so on. There was one budget bingo where you play one game with one card for $10. The singing & dancing shows were good, Corey Cahaney comedian was good, but the Majika illusion show was kind of corny and they were all about selling their DVD.

The food was decent in the buffet and good in the dining rooms. Two of us must have gluten free food, so we ate in the dining rooms most of the time. We had no problems at all with getting GF food and their special diets person made everything very easy and stress free for us.

Overall, the ship was clean and the staff was very nice.  It's a bit smaller than what we are used to. The itinerary change and how NCL handled it was our biggest issue along with being stuck inside the ship for a long time. We now know that 4 days at sea is not for us, at least on a smaller ship.  Bigger ships have more activities and it may have not been so bad to pass the time.

Inside family cabin for 4 was extremely cramped. We were constantly bumping into one another. Maybe okay for family w/young children, but not for family w/teens. Glad we used our soft duffle bags for luggage because there is absolutely no room to store luggage! On the plus side, the bathroom was a decent size.

Ship tip

Small ship and not many activities for four days at sea.

Ports of call

New York, New York

3 out of 5
Embarkation day was ok, but disembarkation and going through customs was terrible! Add on an extra hour or so for this process.

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
Need longer time at this port to do an amusement park. It takes about an hour to get to the parks from Port Canaveral, so only had about 5 hours in park.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas

1 out of 5
We did not visit this island due to maintenance in Nassau.

Nassau, Bahamas

Must do Atlantis!

Yes dining service was slow. When we went for dinner we were there for 2 hours

quanasia09    8 years ago

someone should definitely call cooperate about the dishonesty.

ccecilio1    8 years ago

Not sure but they won't tell you the truth about it.

quanasia09    8 years ago

that's 3 months of repairs. what are they doing, rebuilding the boat. oh man. but I'm hoping they go straight to Nassau next month now lol ... thank you so much !

ccecilio1    8 years ago

The food was ok but the buffet for breakfast got boring. Buffet has a different theme each night. Dining rooms have themes as well but service was slow

ccecilio1    8 years ago

They started the repairs in March according to other posts.

ccecilio1    8 years ago

The coffee in the buffet is available free almost all day. It was sludge. The drink package does include some coffee but I never figured it out. I brought my own sugar serve coffee and disposable coffee cups with lids. Maxwell house has them like tea bags.

quanasia09    8 years ago

I've heard they've been working on the ship in Nassau for weeks ... how haven't they fixed it yet??

rrusso53    8 years ago

They were working on the ship the whole time we were in nassau

quanasia09    8 years ago

this is my first time cruising NCL so I'm not familiar with their illusion show or the farewell, but how's the food??? & do u know if coffee is included in the unlimited drinks package???

ccecilio1    8 years ago

As far as the ship and the crew it was great until they said the staff does their farewell after the illusion show which never happened. Some guests said it was the second to last night. Other guests and myself were told it was the last night by the staff. Missed it I guess

quanasia09    8 years ago

oh no. I'm sorry they did that. but aside from their little secret how was the reminder of your trip???

ccecilio1    8 years ago

You're welcome. I find out at checkin and was pissed for the whole cruise. Still pissed.

quanasia09    8 years ago

oh okay. thanks guys!! I would've been pissed had I found out on the cruise but I'm glad you guys informed us!! thank you.

ccecilio1    8 years ago

Yes you go directly to Nassau from fl. I think we got there around noon. And stayed that day and the next.

quanasia09    8 years ago

okay so I'm a little confused about the times that we will be in Nassau. I almost prefer staying over night there as there's more to do. but I wish they didn't hide it and they gave people the option. but we would have arrived in GSC at 11am on a Tuesday.. if we're not going what time would we get to Nassau?? we're supposed to get to Nassau on Wednesday at 8am .. so we would get to Nassau on Tuesday instead and leave Thursday at 4am?????

rrusso53    8 years ago

We were supposed to leave 4am but we left at 12

ccecilio1    8 years ago

rrusso53. We left at 4am but you had to be back inboard by 12am

ccecilio1    8 years ago

It is sailing because the ship can still sail. I think the propulsion issue is because the repairs need to be done but there is no dock at gsc

rrusso53    8 years ago

We left at 12am

ccecilio1    8 years ago

You will stay in Nassau for another day and leave at 4am. I would tell them now and prepare for another excursion and it is a credit of $50 per room

rrusso53    8 years ago

We just stayed overnight in nassau

quanasia09    8 years ago

I'm traveling with 16 other family members July 30th. should I tell them before hand ?? .. will we go somewhere else ??? that's ridiculous they shouldn't do that. and if there's a issue with the ship, why is it still sailing??????

quanasia09    8 years ago

what did they do as a replacement???

ccecilio1    8 years ago

The gem is not going and they will lie to you if you ask. Good luck thinking it is just a select few trips. It is all. They won't tell you because they will lose money if everyone reschedules their trip.

challen62101679    8 years ago

just came off the gem no GSC for us and don't think the problem is fixed so one of the staff told me not going this week!

quanasia09    8 years ago

I just called NCL they guy I spoke with said they will cancel if the conditions put the ship in danger. but so far there aren't any .. I'm not sure if I believe that. but fingers crossed :)

marroquin    8 years ago

Will do (: so excited

quanasia09    8 years ago

@guybert definitely keep me posted on what happens. I took a cruise to Nassau and Freeport in april .. on a carnival ship. and alot of the people on the NCL Epic said how they weren't able to tender at GSC due to the choppy seas. But they didn't get any extra time on another island. I hope they'd atleast extend the time at Nassau. It's such a beautiful island with alot to see and do!!

marroquin    8 years ago

Quanasia09 I'm leaving this sat and if that's the case which I hope not cuz I'm in june I'll be p but as long I get the opportunity to get to the Bahamas that's all that really matters I hear so much so at this point I'm about clueless it's all good tho

quanasia09    8 years ago

this is disappointing.. we sail July 30th if they cancel GSC what will take its place ???

Kathy717    8 years ago

We just got back yesterday. Sailed out May 14th

marroquin    8 years ago

Klis 763 when is your sailing

Kathy717    8 years ago

Guybert, I never received an email. We got to the dock to board, at the beginning of the line was a woman giving out a paper stating the itinerary was changed. No gsc. Very disappointed add this was our first ncl cruise. Everyone was talking on board, of enough of us complain we should get $50 per person, not cabin. So please spread the word everyone and start emailing ncl. Heck, every day if we have to.

ccecilio1    8 years ago

Gsc is not gonna happen for anyone on the gem. They are not changing the itinerary online and not emailing everyone. If they inform everyone they will have to deal with cancellation and rebooking. Even if you call they do not tell you the truth. You fet a note at port when you get there with new schedule

challen62101679    8 years ago

no email as of this moment

marroquin    8 years ago

I called today my June sailing is not canceled I think that is for all of may sailings I'm in the June bracket and if gsc doesn't close til august June and July people are safe

rrusso53    8 years ago

Challenger 55 you didn't get an email?

challen62101679    8 years ago

we sail on Saturday 21st

marroquin    8 years ago

Challenger 551 when is your sailing

challen62101679    8 years ago

Ncl have changed the itinerary on my booking but have not informed me it would have been nice to be told!

marroquin    8 years ago

So if I get one do you think it will be June 2 or after memorial day

rrusso53    8 years ago

I got my email on Friday one week before. Some people on here were leaving on the Saturday that just passed and also got there email on Friday, the night before they left

marroquin    8 years ago

I'm 17 days away if that's the case I'm pissed

marroquin    8 years ago

If that's true why weren't I notified

rrusso53    8 years ago

@guybert I don't think your going to GSC. I heard it is off itinerary till october. I am on 5/21 sailing and not going pretty disappointed.

marroquin    8 years ago

Do you people think the ship will be alright for the June 4 sailing I'm looking forward to the island I don't want to miss that this is the first time I have my 26 yr old traveling w me I want him to experience great stirrup cay

Kathy717    8 years ago

Same here, we're on the cruise right now. Very disappointed about Great Stirrup Cay. We booked the British Colonial Hilton for Wednesday. Day pass 10-6 is $60, with s $40 food and beverage credit. And yes, it should have been $50 per person, nor per cabin.

NCL can't control the wind.
