Review summary

The cruise was wonderful, with beautiful ports of call and lovely excursions. The ship was a different story. We have sailed on several Norwegian ships, and the Escape is the worst. We were glad to escape the Escape.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Embarkation went more smoothly than usual.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
The Manhattan Room and La Cucina provided fine dining, as usual, but the Garden Cafe was terrible - very limited food choices and incompetent staff.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Interesting activities consisted mostly of walking on deck. The mini-golf was okay, but too mini.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We saw "After Midnight". Excellent!

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our room steward, Ferdinand, was wonderful - friendly, helpful, and always willing to go above and beyond. The waiters and bartenders were courteous and efficient, with the previously noted incompetence of the Garden Cafe staff. The Cruise Consultants were very helpful.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship's layout is good, except for the narrow passageways by the shops. The common areas are clean and in good condition. The toilets smell awful.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was excellent - roomy, comfortable, and well-laid out. A goodly amount of storage space for a cruise ship. The steward kept it very clean. One needed repair was carried out very quickly.

Ship tip

Don't expect to eat well at the buffet.

Ports of call

New York, New York

1 out of 5
I must confess that I hate New York City. I went there only to catch the ship.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

5 out of 5
St. Thomas is beautiful. We visited Coral World and had a very pleasant and educational experience.

St. John's, Antigua

4 out of 5
Beautiful island, but with many run-down villages and decrepit homes. We took the Scenic Drive which was very pleasant.

Bridgetown, Barbados

5 out of 5
Lovely island with very friendly people. We went on the Atlantis submarine. It was wonderful! Highly-recommended.

Castries, St. Lucia

5 out of 5
St. Lucia is my favorite island - beautiful scenery, and extremely friendly people. We took the St. Lucia Trolley Train which is a lot of fun, although not quite as well-organized as on our last visit.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

5 out of 5
St. Christopher is breathtakingly beautiful. The view as we sailed away was stunning. We took the St. Kitts Scenic Railway and had a lovely outing.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
As with embarkation, our disembarkation ran more smoothly than usual.

We loved the Escape when it sailed out of Miami. Historymann49 gave it 4 out of 5 stars, which I think is a pretty good star rating. We had no complaints with the Garden Cafe staff or food. The speciality dining venues are excellent. The ship is kept clean and in good condition; we did not notice any foul smell coming from the public toilets. We would sail the Escape again in a heartbeat if it returned to Florida.

The Escape is our favourite NCL ship, but we hated it on the one occasion we sailed it out of New York... We’ve never experienced a crowd like the one that boarded on any other ocean cruise... Grown men fighting, etc... It was obvious it was going to be trouble at the dock when a very large Italian American crowd turned up and seemed only to know words beginning with F... Needless to say that group was central to the fight we saw and so much of the unpleasantness onboard... We too were happy to get off...
