Review summary

This was a "default" cruise resulting from a cancellation of a South Pacific cruise last year, so it was a let-down. We were very disappointed that 2 of the original ports were dropped (Bonaire and Cayman Island) due to COVID and no compensation was offered. NCLis still our "go-to" mid-range cruise line, but their prices have skyrocketed recently and are pushing us toward the premium cruise lines.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was a breeze, even with the required COVID test.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Overall, the food and beverage service was fine. The buffet was always well stocked with a wide selection and the specialty restaurants were all very good. The main dining room food was good, but the service was spotty, especially considering the ship was only half full.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The normal activities were available, but nothing outstanding.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
This might have been the major disappointment of the cruise. The main theatre had one show with the full cast that was enjoyable, but other shows were lacking, especially the "comedian".

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Service was mostly good. Our room steward was excellent, buffet staff was great, wait staff in the restaurants was hit or miss.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
This was our first time on the Dawn and we found it to have an awkward layout that took some time to get used to. It was in good physical condition and everything worked. The ship was spotless and was actively being cleaned and maintained as we cruised.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was great. Good size, very clean and in good shape for an older ship.

Ports of call

Tampa, Florida

5 out of 5
Maybe the best port for travelling to and from the ship. The airport is relatively close to the cruise terminal. The terminal is easy to navigate and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

3 out of 5
This was an interestinng city to visit, but nothing really "special". We only did the city tour that hit the local tourist spots.

Catalina Island (Isla Catalina), Dominican Republic

2 out of 5
Nice beach, but not a lot to do besides snorkling. No food or drinks were available, only water.

Oranjestad, Aruba

3 out of 5
Picturesque city with a lot of history, but overall just touristy.

Willemstad, Curacao

3 out of 5
We took the cave tour - interesting, but just another cave. At least the guide spoke excellent English. We did not explore the city in any detail due to the short time we had in port.

Cartagena, Colombia

4 out of 5
The city has a lot of history and is worth visiting. We took the "eco-tour" which was a canoe ride through a mangrove forest. Do something else (not as much wildlife as promised)!

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very smooth, but with the ship only half occupied, this was expected.

Thanks for the review. Cruising during Covid requires patience and flexibility. Things are not the same as previously and may never be exactly the same again.
