Review summary

I sailed the 7-night April 9-16, 2023 cruise aboard the NCL Breakaway. The cruise departed from and returned to New Orleans. POSITIVES: *Great food in the three main restaurants. NCL really stands out in this area. I can say this is a company-wide trait and one that influences me to keep sailing NCL. *Water slides were great when working. *Harvest Caye is excellent. *The crew is well-trained to smile and speak to guests. Even the "Washy Washy" lady did a great job and her singing was fun and delightful. *The bartenders were almost uniformly above-average although my requests for light pours were sometimes disregarded. *The main theater shows - “Six” and “Burn the Floor” - were magnificent. These are the best two cruise shows I have seen in 45 years of cruising. *Blue Ocean cuisine is very, very good. Also, the service was top-notch. An outstanding dining experience. *The best desserts at the buffet were the freshly made desserts in the large cooking pans such as bread pudding and flan. These weren’t as artfully presented as the other desserts but they tasted fantastic. *The Behind the Scenes cruise tour was very good, thorough, and complimentary. ********* While the positives greatly outweighed the negatives, here is where I think NCL can improve: *Overall, the buffet was average in food quality and variety, and below average in seating options. *The ship was full. With seating around the pool being limited, I had to go to the pool early to "save" a lounge chair in order to get one. *I never heard live music at the pool. *I miss the dress code that once was in place for Savor and Taste. *Getting specialty dining reservations at normal meal times was difficult. *Calling the operator or guest services from the room was a waste of time. Either my calls were not answered, the operator did not know the answer to my questions, or, in one case gave me incorrect information. *While the water slides and ropes course were great, the freefall slides were often inoperable. Also, the hours for the slides and ropes course were limited even on sea days.

Embarkation

In New Orleans, get to the port early. The assigned boarding times were absolutely not enforced.

This interior cabin is very small. The bathroom is the highlight. It was updated very well during the last renovation. Maid service is only once a day. It appeared that housekeeping was understaffed.

Ship tip

As soon as you board, go straight to the specialty dining reservations area and make your reservations immediately (or change what you have to better times). Ask if you can make more reservations than you have paid for. Remember, you can always cancel reservations later. Then immediately go to the theater box office and reserve seats for the shows and times you want. NCL has a number of shows with reservations. Then go to the Guest Services Desk to inquire about getting a room upgrade. It won't be free but will usually be much less than the online cost to upgrade. Even if you don’t take the offer you get, you will learn something about NCL’s last-minute pricing policy. If you don’t get the specialty dining reservation days/times you want, stop by your desired specialty restaurant on the day you want it to see if it has openings. Of then they do. Also, ask if it has tables that can’t be reserved. This is common and if so, then just come back early (usually before 7 is sufficient) and get one of these tables.

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you've already seen the French Quarter, check out the National World War II Museum. If you can stow your luggage somewhere while touring, there is no reason to arrange this trip through NCL. Just get an Uber and go there. It's only one mile from the NCL Cruise Terminal (aka, the Julia Street Cruise Terminal). The best Uber or Lyft pick-up point is down Julia Street across and past Convention Center Blvd. Using the pickup point I just described is optimal due to all the one-way streets in New Orleans. The Museum is very safe, clean, modern, and has tons to see including an impressive collection of original WWII airplanes. There's also a good and very nice restaurant in the Museum. This is TripAdvisor's #1 rated New Orleans attraction for good reason.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

Costa Maya is the very touristy cruise port. Mahahual is the nearby town. The best thing to do here is take a $5 pp taxi ride to Mahahual and walk the oceanfront sidewalk. Here you can buy lots of inexpensive crafts and get an incredibly cheap but very good massage. I've done gotten massages here three times and never paid more than $30 for an hour. Otherwise, in my opinion, just walk around the Costa Maya cruise port and then head back to the ship.

Disembarkation

NCL has the most chaotic disembarkation process of all the major cruise lines. Disregard the times on your luggage tags. Just get in the very long line early and depart. You can leave whenever you want to and all the luggage is offloaded at dawn.

Excellent review! And speaking of the world war, two museum… My son, and I spent six hours there and could’ve stayed longer!

Thanks for the reminder that passengers can get specialty restaurant dining reservations 120 days before the sail date. My recommendation above applies to passengers who did not get the dates and/or times they wanted or who want to change their specialty dining schedule. Additional reservations are opened on each sail date. However, these newly opened reservations, can only be accessed in person or through stateroom TV’s. In my experience, it’s much easier to make these reservations in person since the stateroom TV reservation system does not work easily or reliably. Also, my recommendation applies for passengers dining alone. Specialty restaurant dining reservations prior to the sail date must be made for at least two people.

Seems a lot of people don’t realize NCL opens up reservations for speciality dining 120 days out. Making reservations before you board is so much easier.

Glad you had a great time....but my experience on the Norwegian Gem was not...we could only stand to eat at Asian restaurant....dont understand having to pay a fee to use special restsurant.....then be charged for the best food items......I wont be cruising Norwegian cruise lines again.
