Review summary

We have taken over twenty cruises on a half dozen different cruise lines and have never had an experience as bad as we had on this cruise. We will never again take a Norwegian cruise of four thousand people.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
Awful. Terminal parking lot was full due to inadequate capacity. Had to use private parking scalper at $30 per day four blocks from terminal.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Main dining room had dinner dancing but to a jazz band ... undancable. Generally faced twenty to forty minute wait to be seated. Drink package was never explained??? Was charged $68 for a $27 bottle of wine. It took two days and several hours to resolve the problem. The buffet however was excellent with a wide variety of choices. The ship is primarily a floating array of expensive reservation only restaurants.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Had to make reservations for shows and events due to gross over crowding. Enjoyed disco dancing on the outdoor H20 deck. Enjoyed ballroom dancing the last night of the cruise when the dining room jazz band was replaced with a duo that actually played dance music.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Burn the Floor show was spectacular ... one of the best cruise shows we have ever seen.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Guest Services desk was saturated ... long lines every day at most times of the day. Inadequate staffing.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Beautifully designed ship but totally lacking indoor ocean view quite space to read and relax. All indoor ocean view areas were taken up by expensive restaurants. The only comfortable ocean view chairs were adjacent to the Atrium zoo scene ... no too relaxing.

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
Cabin had no chairs whatsoever. Requested two and received one that we shared during the cruise. We shared the one chair for five days. No map of the ship was provided in the room. The elevator proximity diagrams of the ship were badly designed, making one search for desired locations.

Ship tip

Never sail on a ship carrying almost 4,000 people.

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

1 out of 5
Logistics at the cruise terminal are terrible. Inadequate parking garage space ... arrange for a shuttle.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

3 out of 5
Great place to buy items made in China.

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5

Disembarkation

1 out of 5
Due to inadequate terminal parking capacity, we had to slup our bags four blocks in 28 degree 25 knot wind conditions.

After having taken 20 cruises with different lines you sound as a first-time cruisers that have never bothered to do any research. There are three MDRs on The Breakaway, only one with dancing and long wait, etc.

Never cruise around a holiday if you don’t like crowds.

Appreciate your very detailed review. Good lessons concerning bigger ships. Sorry this cruise didn’t meet your expectations.
