Review summary

It could have been better in a lot of ways, but overall we looked forward to being off the ship, not on. Disappointed in a few things. I don't have room here to explain.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Seems that the NCL staff were a little confused to direct 4K people aboard. They didn't know which line each person needed to be in, etc.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We did NOT go to any specialty dining s, only the buffet and a la carte restaurants. The food was good in some places, and average in others. Cannot make an overall statement here. One thing that no one liked is that around 9:30 pm, they were closing down the buffet, which leads all the cruisers to notice that it is impossible to get a "late night snack" if they were closed.

Garden Café

4 out of 5

This is their main buffet. They had the usual fare and then some ethnic foods, too. Other items were unusual. Scrambled eggs in the morning were real eggs, not egg powder like on other ships not of NCL.The biggest problem was that most of the food was lukewarm. No one bothered to see if you paid for any of the non-alcoholic drinks, so that didn't bode well with us, since we just paid out over $145 for a non-alcoholic drink package. Didn't need to because the drinks were all free.Tables were kept clean, cutlery and napkins were clean. Of course you have your normal-to-be-expected rude people, always cutting in lines, either in front of you, or someone that's not as fast as these rude people were.Overall, the food was fresh and decent.

Savor Restaurant

5 out of 5

This place was so good that we went twice. Everything from the waitress to the seating spot to the food itself was outstanding!

Taste Restaurant

5 out of 5

This is the "sister" restaurant to Savor. Also went here once at night and once for lunch. Both times were excellent.

O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar and Grille

4 out of 5

We went there one night. Husband wanted to have a Reuben. He did. Said it was okay. I had broiled chicken strips. They were also good. Ate and left.

Ocean Blue on the Waterfront

4 out of 5

Horace was our waiter. could not have asked for a better one. He was excellent! Food was very good. I am not a seafood person, so my spouse told me that his was good. I of course had land food and that, too, was very good.Overall a little pricey for the amount of food, but good quality and decent.

Cagney's Steakhouse

3 out of 5

Vegetable was lukewarm. No alcohol for us, but their ice tea was good. Dessert was strange (raspberry creme brulee-the whole thing tasted of raspberries; a little overpowering).Waiter was not easy to understand due to his accent, but attentive and polite.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
EVERYTHING cost extra, so we did not participate in any rock climbing, the fitness center, or anything else. Even going to a show required a ticket--although a few didn't. Hard to say how to rate this, since it was not as simple as "cruiseline" is trying to get us to write. Instead of doing activities aboard, we elected to go on three excursions, which were fabulous! The Meet & Greet was not what we expected. They said that 162 +\- had signed up, yet about 30-50 showed up. We really didn't do anything but sit around and talk to our "table neighbors," then left.

Meeting Room

1 out of 5

Well, there was supposed to be a Bible study in this meeting room--only it was never advertised, so thanks to someone in the Miami office not understanding what we were going to do, it was in their Freestyle paper twice--out of seven days! It was arranged EIGHT MONTHS AGO, but since she misunderstood, it barely took place. No matter what we did, no one cared enough to change this. This alone helped us make the decision to NEVER sail with NCL again!

Tradewinds Tax & Duty-Free

4 out of 5

Of course it's overpriced and some of the normal sales tactics and pressure to buy is included in this section. No we did not purchase the extremely overpriced $200 photo package. If you bought just one, that's $20...crazy! The last day before debarkation we did buy one small item. Went home and Googled the item. Surprisingly it was not marked up 1000%, as is usual for any cruise ship to do. Item was priced exactly as it is shown on the manufacturer's website, so we felt good about that (did not get ripped off).

Guest Services

2 out of 5

TWO or three people at the GS desks??? for a cruise of over 4,000 people? What were they thinking? Lines down the hallway, waiting for your turn.Very poorly managed. Needs a LOT of improvement here.

Entertainment

Again, because it cost extra and we weren't interested in the themes of the shows.

The Library

4 out of 5

Small. We went there for quiet. Unfortunately in this supposed "library" which we always take to mean quiet, it was anything but. Older folks getting drunk--and of course loud--while they're playing a game, younger kids carrying on...just before we left, they all left; we were just too tired to go back inside and try to sit in peace, since the entire ship wherever you went was loud.

The Atrium

2 out of 5

If I had to describe this in one word, it would be LOUD--and I do mean loud! Almost everything they did on a small platform was over the top loud, which after a while you just couldn't be anywhere near it. Does loud equate with fun? Does loud mean that they think everyone is deaf or hard of hearing? Or does loud equate with sensory overload so they can pretend that what they're doing is fun?Hard to tell, but we stayed once and left. Just didn't want our ears to keep ringing anymore. Really ruins their little performances or shows by them insisting on keeping the volume up at all hours of the day and most of the night.

Children's Programs

Did not bring any children, only us as a couple.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our stateroom attendant was a very sweet young lady. All the waiters and other staff were VERY attentive.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Layout was easy to understand. Some of the ship could be made brighter, instead of dark wood throughout the common areas. They were very fastidious in trying to keep all common areas clean and for the most part, they did a great job, including the common area restrooms.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Our stateroom attendant did an excellent job of taking care of our room. It was bright, spacious and comfortable--EXCEPT for the constant slamming doors all hours of the night by the cabins near us. The views were outstanding, as was the weather the entire trip. Only one night did we encounter rough seas. Other than that it was smooth sailing.

Ship tip

Do NOT bother purchasing the non-alcoholic drink package or even the water package. Plenty to drink and no charge.

Ports of call

Miami, Florida Did not visit port

Only for embarkation. Stayed in Miami overnight at a hotel downtown that really was overpriced.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

4 out of 5
Did an excursion here. LOVED it. Beautiful, but sadly, very poor. The longer the excursion staff drove us to the designated area, the sadder it gets, since all the "houses" we drove by are nothing more than shacks. No front doors on a lot of them, no windows and most had no screens against bugs. Very sad. As to the excursion, they took us to a "shopping area," which was nothing more than both sides of a certain street with small shops. The thing we did not like was the tour guide took us to a resort beach--complete with a VERY expensive restaurant; as if it were decided ahead of time so the tour guide gets a commission from them. Not very nice to do this to cruisers! Overall though, a very nice place and we would go back tomorrow if we could.

Harvest Caye, Belize

5 out of 5
Simply beautiful! Garden display, small souvenir shops and then we took a tender to the area we were to visit. As a surprise, we also went on an excursion with them to the forest that had "rope bridges" to walk across. We then toured the Mayan ruins and a small spice farm, which was very informative. We were able to purchase some spices to take home (yes the airlines allow you to, just put them in your checked luggage). Loved this island and the very polite and humble people. Definitely would go back here!

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
Excursion was great! Tour guide Daniel had the shuttle bus driver take us all around the entire island. We stopped at a beautiful beach for about 20 minutes, then back into the van again. We also stopped at the "Mayan Cacao Company" for a chocolate demonstration and afterward a shop for purchasing items. Loved this entire trip. Would go back tomorrow!

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Patrick was our tour guide. We were in a small but comfortable van that drove all around Cozumel, stopped at a beautiful beach, then back again to the city. Plenty of places to purchase souvenirs and food. Modern, but small city. People were extremely polite.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Pretty good, considering the amount of people getting off.

We did the rock climbing and ropes course, they were both free.

Do not fear this ship or NCL. Been on the Breakaway 6x and was sad to see it leave NYC. If you dont spend a penny on extras there is more then enough quality food aboard . Great noodle bar included.

Fitness center is not an extra charge, although a few of the classes held there do have an additional fee. Shows are included as well, although you do need a ticket to some of them which you can purchase on line before you board. As far as the “nickel & dimming you”, we’ve sailed on other cruise lines & all are pretty much the same. You don’t have to buy into anything if you don’t want to. Glad you enjoyed your excursions

We were just on this ship in March and quite a few of the shows were free but did highly suggest reservation times, if you were unable to reserve then they had a standby line. As far as the Buffett that closes at 11pm there is always Osheehans for the late night snack attack.

We have not sailed Norwegian but pull plan to. But have heard much nickel and dime tactics on Norwegian.

Going on this ship in two days. Totally different itinerary out of Port Canaveral. I e been on it’s sister ship so I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy this ship as well. Also almost every place/island you visit has a poor economy and people living in poverty. That’s why the cruise boats are so important to them and why you should spend money on cute gifts and tip nice service. All over the Caribbean, Mexico and even found the same in some of our posts in Greece. Of course there are also millionaires on all those islands too.
