Review summary

Overall it was a great cruise for relaxing. If you want to be active and meet new people, this is not the cruise for you. We enjoyed the food and the ship had just enough without being overwhelming. Kudos to Holland America for a great cruise vacation!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
The fastest and smoothest of any cruise I have ever been on. Kudos to the Port and Holland America for a great experience.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food was the best I have ever had on a cruise. Lots to choose from and even most of the items on the buffet were made-to-order. Save some room for the New York Pizza. We went there three times to eat--it was so good! The only complaint: you can't get food after 9:00 pm, not even ice cream or coffee unless you order room service and wait the 40 minutes for it to be delivered. I would like to see this change.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Definitely geared for an older crowd, what we did, we enjoyed. The cruise director was funny and engaging and the spa was excellent. We had discount vouchers and thoroughly enjoyed a couples massage.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The only area really lacking was the entertainment. The dancing was blah and the comedienne only moderately funny. Alx Xandr on the steel drums was cool but it wasn't even close to the solid entertainment I have seen on other ships, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Everyone was super nice on the cruise! They were hospitable and went to the ends of the Earth to make your visit special. Definitely a superior part of Holland America.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
We prefer boats around 2000-3000 guests and this fit the bill. The common areas were clean and well taken care of.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The size and location (top deck) was amazing. First time we had a balcony (which was a little small, judging by the other ship we were in port with) and it was nice to look at the stars at night and enjoy some outside quiet time.

Ship tip

Don't worry about dinner reservations if you are willing to sit with others. We walked up and were seated in less than five minutes each time. We even had out own table 4 of the seven nights, although we never asked for it.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida Did not visit port

Just boarded here.

Grand Turk Island Did not visit port

Weather was terrible and the port was small with little to do.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
We loved San Juan. We walked to the two forts and enjoyed some local food and drink. Lots of history and the locals were super-friendly.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

4 out of 5
St. Thomas is a lot of shopping but if you can get an excursion to the other parts of the island, it is truly beautiful.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

5 out of 5
We rented a cabana and had a blast! Half Moon Cay is beautiful and the water is immaculate. This was our best day weather-wise and we took full advantage of it.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Just as smooth and quick as embarcation . . .
