Review summary

Overall this cruise was good not great. The ship was nice, the ship amenities were good and our time on board was relaxing. We spent a lot of time at the pools. I’d probably only sail this itinerary again if it was really cheap and then just plan for just spending time on the ship.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
The embarkation process was more chaotic then I’m used to. The process starts in tents outside the port building. They were also not abiding by embarkation times which added to the confusion and long lines.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food was good for cruise food. It’s mass produced so you have to have that expectation but I’d rate it better than food we had on Freedom of the seas in March.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We spent a lot of time at the pools. They were nice and the kids really enjoyed them.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Most of the entertainment wasn’t interesting. The only thing really worth seeing was the ice show which was cool. It starts with a drone show which was really good. I wish it was longer and more integrated with the rest of the show. The drones seemed just tacked on to the start of the show.

Cabin / Stateroom

This was our first cruise in an interior room. It was cramped for 4 people. In the future I think we will spend more for a spacious category room or get connecting rooms. The room steward was good though.

Ports of call

Ensenada, Mexico

1 out of 5
The cruise line didn’t offer any family friendly excursions. My son is 5 and didn’t meet the age requirement for any ship offered excursion. Nothing is close to the port. Staff onboard gave us walking directions to some gift shops. However once we cleared the security gates a security officer with a badge told us to get on a shuttle to go to the gift shops. This took us someplace different than we were expecting with 5 or so gift shop stalls and when we got there we were surprised with a fee for the shuttle. It was $4 a person and we’re told it’s $1 to get back. This really put us off. We explored the few stalls but didn’t feel comfortable going much further and returned on the next shuttle back to the ship.

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

3 out of 5
It was okay. The port of LA is a major shipping port. There were shipping containers as far as the eye can see. It was interesting to see.

Catalina Island, California

4 out of 5
We didn’t do an excursion. We just looked shopped and ate lunch. It was a pleasant afternoon. Tendering did take a really long time to get to Catalina.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
The port of LA doesn’t have facial recognition so disembarkation takes a long time. It was at least an hour and a half to get off the ship.
