Review summary

In summary, this was a memorable cruise on an oustanding ship! We have already booked other cruises with Princess, and wouldn’t hesitate to go on Majestic again.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We arrived at OPT at 9:30 am and were able to check our bags in immediately. By 10:30 am we were inside the terminal, and boarding by 11 am! Well done to Princess on an extremely smooth process!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We used the Allegro MDR for the evening meal just a few times because the table-for-two was in effect a table for ten due the close proximity of the tables. On the other hand, we had two lunches in the Concerto MDR and enjoyed the intimacy of a proper table-for-two! The World Marketplace (the Horizon buffet on other Princess ships) had the usual excellent variety and quality that we have experienced previously. We didn’t eat at the specialty restaurants but we thoroughly enjoyed the Noodle Bar and Alfredo’s Pizzeria.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We enrolled in the Lotus Spa and made good use of that. We also spent some time in the Hollywood Conservatory which was a lovely quiet area where you could enjoy reading or playing a board game. The library was small but well equipped with a good variety of books and games.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed the stage show Fiero in the Princess Theatre, but generally avoided that venue as it was always very crowded. The entertainers in the Piazza were always good to hear and see, and added to the experience of enjoying a coffee and cake in that splendid area. The water fountain display on the MUTS deck was also worth seeing.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
As usual, the staff were excellent. Special mention to our room steward, Maynard, who was very efficient whilst being unobtrusive. Also, commendation to the staff on the Purser’s Desk who helped recover a piece of my wife’s jewellery which she lost. The waitstaff in the IC area were also outstanding!

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
We just loved this ship! The ship being quite new was oustanding in its appearance! From the dazzling Piazza to the beautiful artwork and decor throughout the ship, the Majestic is very impressive. We did miss the opportunity to walk around a full Promenade deck, but there are lots of other areas to provide exercise, if desired.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were in an starboard aft balcony stateroom and enjoyed that very much. The room was always spick and span, and there was plenty of storage room for clothes etc, with an abundance of coat hangers, much to my wife’s delight!

Ship tip

Check out the water fountain light display after dark when the full impact is visible.

Ports of call

Auckland, New Zealand

4 out of 5
We used the HOHO bus, which we felt was overpriced at $45 pp. We used this service primarily to visit the Kelly Tarlton’s Sea World display (an extra $30 pp) which was great value, especially the penguin area and Scott’s Hut display. The remainder of the HOHO bus trip was chaotic, with half of the time spent waiting for passengers to fill whatever seats happened to be empty (no standing allowed apparently), having to do this as they negotiated the steps on the double-decker bus without tripping over prams etc which were stored in the aisles and exit of the bus!

Tauranga, New Zealand

5 out of 5
The intinerary introduced us to a new port in NZ, Tauranga, and we absolutely loved the visit here. The magnificent beach with its adjacent alfresco cafes was stunning, and the climb up Mt Manganui presented a vista well worth the effort.

Sydney, Australia

5 out of 5
Embarked and disembarked from Sydney so we didn’t do any ship excursions here. However, post cruise we enjoyed visiting the QV building in Sydney, a magnificent heritage-listed, late-nineteenth-century building in the CBD. Enjoyed the magnificent architecture, cafes, and Victoria’s Basement especially!

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
This was very smooth. We used for the first time the OACIS service to send our luggage ahead to the airport, and this made our trip via the train to the airport much easier, and allowed us the opportunity to look around the Sydney city area without dragging extra bags with us.
