This was our first cruise on Holland America Lines and we very much enjoyed it. We chose the cruise for the eclipse, but Hawaii was a great bonus. HAL has a nice product, though perhaps a little laid back for the more energetic traveler.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Went over early to drop bags an were ushered right through to the ship.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Food was tasty, well-prepared and presented. The "Port to Table" selections missed the mark, but were still very good.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The enrichment lectures were very good. Learning to play the ukulele was fun. Too many of the activities seemed to be associated with the on-board shops.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The production stage shows were very good. We also enjoyed the Billboard pianists almost every night.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Friendly, courteous and always ready to help. Top notch!
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
Aside from deck 10, the ship was easy to navigate. The staff did a great job of cleaning and maintaining. Fresh flowers around the ship was a really nice touch.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
In an interior cabin, we never felt confined. It was comfortable, had all of the amenities that we needed and the stewards kept it clean and welcoming.
Ship tip
The Rolling Stone lounge can get very loud. The band is good, but we found listening from the Billboard helped save our hearing.
Took the HAL "Discover Kauai" excursion. The flowers in Kauai are everywhere. Fern Grotto was amazing. Again, wish we had a little time to explore on our own.
Overnight in Honolulu made it a more relaxing port. We went to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial, a not to be missed activity. There was still plenty of time to visit Chinatown, the Capital and the beach.
Used our Cruises.com credit to do the "Best of Big Island and Volcanoes National Park" excursion. Highly recommended! The black sand beach was amazing, but looking down into the Kilauea crater was breathtaking.
A very walkable city with a lot to see. We were there while the gardens were in full Spring bloom. It was beautiful. Fisherman's Wharf is not be be missed.
