Review summary

I loved everything about the Island Princess, Princess cruise lines and Alaska! What I upsets me is all of the people who go on to post only negative reviews. This trip was amazing from start to finish. I wish we could have had better weather in our first two ports, but that is the only thing I would change if I could. Princess upgraded us from the obstructed ocean view cabin to an unobstructed ocean view cabin at no charge. We were then offered a balcony cabin at a very good price and took them up on the offer. We are so glad that we did! Once we got to Glacier Bay our Balcony was the place to be. The sky's were clear the sun shone bright and  ship cruised in so close to Marjorie glacier. The views were spectacular. The shower was on the small side, but it proved to be sufficient for personal hygiene and if we wanted to enjoy relaxing in hot water the hot tubs on board are a wonderful place for that. The crew goes above and beyond what is expected at every level.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Food was delicious and we loves the waiter "Mark ... Mark, from New York .... New York St. the Philippine's". He was very helpful and patient when we could not decide what to get. His suggestions were very helpful.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
The Princess Patter is packed full of good activities from start to finish everyday. If you can't find something you like, then you are not trying.

Service and Staff

Our cabin steward was extremely helpful.

Ship Quality

The ship is laid out very well. I liked having the buffet in the front of the ship. It was a nice place to go for an evening snack with the windows across the bow, we loved seeing where we were going while the sun was setting over the mountains.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This was a standard balcony cabin. The layout was good. The views of Alaska were amazing from our balcony and it was all very average size for a balcony cabin.

Ship tip

We chose anytime dining and tried to go at 5:30 each day. This way we did not have to wait for a table and were able to take advantage of later show performances if we wanted to. Most nights when we were leaving the dining room there were people waiting to be seated.

Ports of call

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

Choose to sail out of Vancouver vs. Seattle. We have sailed out of both ports and you will get through Vancouver terminal much faster!

Ketchikan, Alaska

Be prepared for rain. It rains a lot in this port. Choose your excursions with this in mind. Also check the time your ship will be in port. We chose the crab fest and ended up eating crab at 10:00 AM. Check out Creek Street if you can.

Juneau, Alaska

5 out of 5
Whales, Mendenhall and Mt. Roberts Tram are the port Highlights. Stop in the Red Dog Saloon too if you have the time. Keep your eyes pealed and camera's ready for Eagles too they are plentiful at this port.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Love Skagway! We booked a trip outside of Princess with Dyea Dave. We went to Emerald Lake. This was awesome. We got off the ship had no problem finding Chris and found out we were his only passengers for the day. We had a private tour for way less than what Princess would have charged! Chris was great and helpful if finding wildlife. We saw 3 bears and a group of Dall Sheep. Emerald Lake was beautiful and Carcross was a great little town to see. Stop in to the general store for some authentic Alaskan made items. Chris would have also dropped us off for a White Pass train ride back to port too if we had chosen to do that.

Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska

Easy port for disembarking. A shot walk through a covered sidewalk to the train.

No more hot tubs on cruise ships for me. Twice got hot tub rash before I realised where it came from. Very nasty, itchy lumps everywhere that became open sores, flu like symptons, crook for 10 days. Google hot tub rash then beware, cruise ship hot tubs are one of the main offenders because of heavy usage. Potentially lots of other nasties in hot tubs difficult to control
