Independence of the Seas

5 Night Western Caribbean (Galveston Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 01, 2021

Ship: Independence of the Seas

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

I definitely recommend this itinerary and ship. Remember to download the app and print your documents before leaving home. We ordered the at-home monitored test through Royal Caribbean. It was very easy and quick.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was super easy. The instructions are very clear...each passenger needs 4 documents (passport, vaccination card, proof of negative test, and sail pass). We printed out all documents before leaving home. We also downloaded the app and set up our profiles. If you do all of the setup prior to the cruise in the comfort of your own home, you will save soooo much time!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We ate supper once in the main dining room on this trip. We are not big fans and this did not change our minds. We did pre-purchase the unlimited dining package which saved us lots of money. Chops Grille was the highlight (as always)! Giovanni's and Izumi are super! Johnny Rockets...always inviting and fun.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
The ship was very clean and well maintained. It is obvious that the COVID down time was used wisely.

Service and Staff

Nothing spectacular to report. We were not happy with security. They confiscated our USB charging brick. To be clear, it is not a surge protector or an extension cord. It just allows you to plug in more than one USB cord at one time. Security insisted it was an extension cord. We had 2 cell phones, 2 cameras and my husband's CPAP. having only 2 outlets just does not work.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship was very clean and well-organized. The COVID protocols were appropriate without being overly burdensome.

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
The outlets were a serious issue for us. There were only 2 outlets by the vanity. We requested an extension cord for my husband's CPAP about 2 months prior to sailing. We still had to request it from our cabin steward. Usually there is an outlet under the bed that works well with a converter. It was removed. We were expected to run the extension cord across the walking area from the vanity to the bed. Total tripping hazard in the middle of the night. Thankfully, we always bring magnetic hooks (the ceiling and all walls are metal). We ran the cord up the wall and across the ceiling. Not pretty...but definitely safer. The other problem is that the refrigerator is not a refrigerator anymore. It is just a "cooler" according to the label. We always pre-order bottles of water for the cabin. Cold water at night is a thing for us. Not on this ship (and I assume this will be a new trend).

Ship tip

Always bring magnetic hooks. You never know when or how you will use them.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

We highly recommend the ATV ride through the jungle. The ATVs are a bit older, but that doesn't matter. If you get bogged down in a mud hole or your ATV stalls, they just bring a new one (in less than a minute). The excursion ends with a few hours on the beach...or you can pay for a taxi to take you back to the cruise early. We left early because the local merchants are very harassing.

Cozumel, Mexico

Another great excursion...the Fury Catamaran, Snorkel and Beach Break. The catamaran was very clean and spacious. The snorkel activity was extremely organized. You enter and exit the water via steps down the bottom of the boat...no climbing over the sides. One of the crew swims with a giant buoy so you can see your target. Free drinks after snorkeling!!! Then to the private beach. No merchants harassing anyone. The trip back to the ship was especially nice with line dancing and singalongs.

Disembarkation

Really easy!! Be careful after exiting customs. The State of Texas has a table set up to "collect taxes" on alcohol and cigars. They separate your party and rush you through. They don't follow the same rules as US Customs. It was only $14 for us, but it wasn't required.

Can you provide a picture of the type of charging cube you had? Mine has a cord and usb or outlet options. Afraid it may be confiscated as well. Too late to order something else, it said cruise approved

I am really surprised, especially since you were on a Royal Caribbean ship that you do not like the meals in the MDR. We think the gate absolutely delicious. We even go there for breakfast. We think spending money on the specialty restaurants is just a waste unless you have OBC or they come included.
