Review summary

It was a good cruise. I loved the three days at sea before getting to the ports and the three days at sea after the ports. It was very relaxing for me. Would do it again.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
This was our first cruise as diamond so it was nice going to a separate lounge after checking in to wait to board.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
The food was mostly good. I haven’t been on a smaller ship for awhile so I had to get used to less choices.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
You can always find something to do. We like to relax so we didn’t do a lot of activities.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Loved all the shows and headliners. The only one we missed was the hypnotist.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
We had great service and did not come across any rude staffers. Our room steward was great. I love the way the Captain is available. You can see him walking around the ship. He has quite a sense of humor and enjoyed his daily announcements.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
It’s an older ship but kept very well. I prefer a promenade over a centrum.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
The reason I gave our cabin a 3 is because we had a constant odor in our room. It sometimes smelled like burning oil and other times like food. One day the odor of garlic and onions had us, and our next door cabin person, out in the hall wondering what it was. Talked to customer service and they said it had something to do with the venting system and they would see what they could do. Reported is again at the end of the cruise to tell them it didn’t get any better and they should check it again so the next people coming in won’t have the same problem. The cabin was spacious and had lots of storage area. Other than the odor, it was a good room.

Ship tip

It’s dated but is a great ship. The staff was friendly. I prefer a promenade over a Centrum because when they do shows in the centrum, there isn’t enough seating. When you’re short like me, it’s hard to see over the people when you’re standing four or five deep. Just enjoy it and have a good time.

Ports of call

Baltimore, Maryland Did not visit port

We only live an hour and a half away and just drove to the terminal. No need to visit the area.

St. John's, Antigua

We did not do an excursion as we were there before. We just walked around the port area.

Bridgetown, Barbados

4 out of 5
We did a scenic bus tour. It was good but the roads are winding and narrow. That bothered me a bit. I’m glad I took a motion sickness pill before we went on the excursion. The tour was informative and we had a great tour guide.

Castries, St. Lucia

Same thing here. We did a scenic bus tour and the winding narrow roads were a problem. Again I took a motion sickness pill. The tour was informative and we enjoyed it. The tour guide was good too.

Fort-De-France, Martinique

4 out of 5
We did the botanical gardens excursion. We really enjoyed that. It was a little scary walking on the suspension bridge, but you don’t have to do it in order to see all the gardens. I would recommend this excursion.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

We were here before and took a taxi to the port where all the shops are. We did not park at the usual dock. We docked in the industrial part and so we had to take a taxi to the area where we usually dock. I prefer the other dock so you can come and go more than once to the shops if you want to.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
No problems except we had a private van picking us up, and where they have you getting off is on the wrong side of the building where your driver is to pick you up and no one ever told us that. We were waiting alongside of the building trying to communicate with our driver as to where we were when an RC employee walked passed us and asked if we needed help. She then told us where the private vehicles waiting area would be.

Royal Caribbean consistently gets odds of -2.  So, if you want to award 5 stars, you have to give it a 7.   Norwegian also starts at -2.  Carnival a -3.  Princess and Celebrity are even.   I won’t get into the over / unders.

Hi Blondie, I'm glad you explained why the stars were low but your words were overall pretty good. I love the Grandeur and all it has to offer for a relaxing and enjoyable cruise. I'm looking forward to my cruise Dec. 9. - Thanks.

We always enjoy the sea days. Gives you time to explore the ship and not rush to do things.

I submitted this review but I did not give anything lower than a three. Because of the comments I made, my ratings were lowered. There was only one negative comment I made about the odor in our cabin. The rest of the comments were based on what we chose to do. If we didn’t want to do activities, we didn’t. It didn’t mean the activities were bad. As for the port ratings, I gave all 4’s. My comments about the winding roads must have brought the rating down. Embarkation was great. Not sure why it was changed to a 1. We had a good cruise and I would rate this a 4. I’m not sure why the numbers changed when I submitted this review. Maybe next time I won’t comment and just use the number scale.
