Review summary

Since this was a 50th Wedding Anniversary Cruise, we wanted special, more intimate dining. So, on the first night, in the Main Dining Room, we asked for a table for 2 (this option was not available on the registration form, only which seating we wanted.) we were told we had to take the table assigned because there were none left. We then went to the "My Time" Dining Room and were told that they couldn't seat us because we already had an assigned seat in the Main Dining Room. We then went to "Customer Service" and were told they couldn't help us either and made no effort to try to accomodate us. Since we were NOT WELCOME in the Dining Room (or My Time Dining Room) on the first night, we chose to eat in our room or in the Windjammer the ENTIRE Cruise.  There is such a limited menu for room service, there is hardly a choice and it ALWAYS came cold. (We still tipped generously) The Windjammer, with a few exceptions, offers the same tasteless, mixed up foods, many of which were frozen foods. There is no service of any kind at The Windjammer.  The drinks are so watered down, that you can't even recognize them as tea or lemonade.  We got a pre-paid soft drink package for my husband but the 3 Coke and Diet Coke dispensing machines were often empty.  The Tee Shirt Sale on the last day was extremely disorganized, crowded, HOT and slow. The embarking and disembarking procedures were very fast and well organized. The ONLY service we received was from our room attendant, Anneyi.  She was awesome. We have been on many cruises on other lines and this is the 3rd RCCL cruise we have taken and have had very good experiences with all but this one. I definitely would not recommend this cruise.

Anneyi was our room attendant and she was fantastic! She did a perfect job in keeping the room clean and always asked if there was anything she could do for us. Good job Anneyi !!!

This was a perfect choice of cabin for us. Anneyi was our room attendant and she kept our room meticulous, yet, respected our privacy. One of the best we've had.

Ship tip

Don't go on this ship!

One other option for eating in your cabin is to go to main dining and ask to for an entree/meal that you can bring back to your room. They will typically give it to you that way they receive it from the kitchen in the dining room. It is a least an option.

Every time I have made reservation with RCCL, have been asked "is there a special occasion we can help you celebrate". Grab due is probably most friendly staff we have encountered. On Windjammer, we enjoy it more than main dining room, mainly so casual, and what a view.

One option that hasn't been mentioned, if they didn't like the MDR arrangement, why didn't they try one of the 3 Specialty Restaurants?

We have cruised many times and totally agree with exnasm68. We love meeting other cruisers and have formed lasting friendships. Our travel agent always asks the size of table we prefer and the seating time. We have celebrated our anniversary onboard a couple times and our table mates and servers enjoy celebrating with us! I guess any vacation is what you yourself make it.

Wow! We have cruised on Grandeur 4 times, 5th one coming up in April, and never had a bad experience. We love it. It is small, but the food I thought was good and the staff awesome. I guess it's all what you make of it.

I just don't understand some people's approach to cruising. Cruising cannot be compared to a land vacation where you have way more flexibility than when you are on a ship. If, as jop1019 stated, they have been on many cruises, then they would know to make special dining arrangements before you leave home. Once on board, with a ship that is fully booked, there is very little flexibility to change dining and cabin arrangements. Perhaps this is a personal preference, but when we celebrate a momentous family occasion, we want to share that with as many family and friends as possible. To celebrate my 70th birthday, we are cruising with our children and all of our grand children. My wife and I eat alone most of the year, so on a cruise we like to be with family and friends. Then, to punish yourself by eating in your cabin, well, I just don't get that. What about specialty restaurants if you don't want to eat in the main dining room. Then there are those who constantly complain about "my time" or "anytime" dining. I have been on almost 60 cruise and have always eaten fixed time dining. Your table is always there when you arrive in the dining room and you have the same wait staff the entire. cruise. By the 2nd day they know your name and your drink preferences. By the end of the cruise you feel like family. When my wife and I cruise with adults, we always pick the late seating. Less of a hurry coming back from shore. Time to shower, time for drinks, and less pressure to hurry our dining experience because someone else needs our table. I know I'm showing my age, but cruising is not just your transportation to get from island to island. Cruising is an experience that is, or at least should be, different from a land-based vacation. Parks, boardwalks, and neighborhoods should stay on land. Being at sea should be about relaxing days with no WiFi, but with fresh breezes and a gentle rolling of your ship. The best way to enjoy that is to take a transatlantic crossing.

You were welcomed. Just not where you wanted.

Also things are often crazy day one and they can sometimes make accommodations on the second day once everything is settled down.

I couldn't agree more Karen. We cruise often and want to meet as many people as we can when on holiday. Why sit on your own. You can do that every day at home.😆

You probably should have called RC ahead of cruise and asked for a table for two. I called ahead months before my cruise and requested a table with my brother and his friend and they easily accommodated us. I don't understand why you had to eat dinner alone. We celebrate anniversaries and always enjoy meeting new people at the dining room. You probably missed out on good company and food, ashame.
