Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
We were in Club Class dining....Service and food really were bad. Is this supposed to be upscale dining? I would really hate to eat in normal dining. Food and service were really substandard and what you’d expect in a school cafeteria. I had scallops one night and the scallops were so full of sand they were uneatable. Food was either over or under cooked. Vegetables were old and showing they were old. The few times we ate here, I’d take the brown lettuce from the salads and lay them on the table. They would set there until our table was cleared at the end of the meal. We ate at the steakhouse a couple of times. Food was ok but not worth the upcharge. The taste and presentation were what I’d have expected in Club Class. The only this was the service was great and twice as much food as most people would eat. The best food that we had onboard were the pizza locations, Trident Gill and Room Service and the Ice Cream place on deck. Simple food but really good. Maybe I’m too critical but as a classically trained Chef I know what food should look like and taste like. So most of what we ate was lacking. When I was going through school I taught my wife a lot of what I was taught and I use her to help develop new preparations. She saw a lot of what I saw.

Onboard Activities

Lots of things to do. We did everything from just laying on our deck to doing the ultimate tour of the ship. Just walking the ship it never seemed crowded and the ultimate tour was awesome. The cost is $150 but because of the things we saw and the swag that was given to us it was well worth it. The swag amounted to at least $150. Also did the Chef's table. This was well worth the price and what I would expect for upscale dining. AWESOME food. We had a great time.

Medical Center

5 out of 5

My wife's a medical doctor for the government and as we took the tour of the ship she said they have better equipment and can do more on the ship than they can on land.

Entertainment

We heard some of the performers in the main common area. The performers were ok but the pianos sound like they were banging a child's piano. It sounded out of tune.

Service and Staff

We were in one of the penthouses and our steward sucked. He did the least he could do. On a 10 day cruise he vacuumed our room one time. We know this from some cookie that was on the floor in the living room area. Our room service steward was awesome. The staff in the shops and deck area were awesome. Very nice and fun to talk to.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
It's been a while between upgrades, so it's starting to show it's age. But I understand it's almost time for it to go into drydock. But overall it was nice and clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

A little on the small size for a penthouse compared to other ships we've been on, but not bad. It's the first one that we've done on the very back of the ship. It was interesting and we enjoyed it. The strange thing was the bathroom and for that matter the entire cabin lighting. The placement of the switches for the bathroom lights were next to the door on the outside and next to the room door. The other light switches were in between the living room and bedroom. On other ships we've been on there's a step down or level entry into the bath but this one has a good 4 inch step up into the bathroom.

Ship tip

Don't tip your room steward at the start of the cruise. With all of our cruises this guy was the worst.

Ports of call

San Francisco, California

At first we booked the transfers to the ship from the airport. However, I read that they put you on a bus and you set there for 3 hours before going to the dock. I even talked to the lady’s that were meeting you at baggage claim and they confirmed this. We opted to get a private limo to the ship. We were in San Francisco this past Sept and spent all of our time there in the area of Fisherman's Wharf, so we knew where to go before we sailed. We dropped our bags at the ship when we first got there and walked down to Fisherman's Wharf, maybe a quarter of a mile. Had a nice relaxing time until we could board.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

If you didn't see the mountains you'd think you were Miami, FL. Where we docked there was a huge mall nest to the ship along with a Wal-Mart and Sam's next to it. Except for the boths next to the ship was like being home.

Manzanillo, Mexico

This is listed as a red zone by the state department because of crime. Even though we stayed on board there wasn't anywhere close to the ship to walk to.

Mazatlan, Mexico

Another location that is listed as a red zone by the state department because of crime. Even though we stayed on board there wasn't anywhere close to the ship to walk to.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

This is what we expected for a port in Mexico. Lots of bright colors and places to shop. You had to be careful about where things were made. A lot of the tourist things are made in India. Think about that.

Disembarkation

Super fast and the way they have your baggage arranged was the best we've seen on a ship.

Hi. We were on the same cruise. This time our room steward was Ok. Not the best we’ve had. But when you get a bad one it sure makes a person upset. It seems like some we need to train. Especially when you are in a full suite. But glad in general you had a good cruise. Roberta D.
