Review summary

Let's start with the embarkation - it was ridiculous. The porters refused to take luggage from those people in the front of the line. Instead, they went further down the line and took luggage only from those individuals that were holding out enough money to (apparently) deem it worth their time. Because of that, the line moved very slowly. The food on the ship was mediocre compared to other cruises that we have taken. Ship cleanliness was unacceptable - there were foul odors in various parts of the ship the entire 10 days. Onboard activities and entertainment were very substandard, especially for a cruise that has 6 days at sea. Frequently, there were no meaningful activities taking place. The bands and DJ were the worst that we've ever experienced on a cruise. The Security personnel on this ship were rude, and were making poor decisions. They would open and close gangways at will, creating large backups as people were trying to get off the ship for excursions. Although I never saw any passengers creating trouble, I saw the security personnel consistently being rude to most passengers. Rudeness by any department on a cruise ship should be completely unacceptable - but apparently is not on the Grand Princess. This was our first Princess cruise, and it did not leave us wanting to go on another one - we'll stick with NCL, who provides a consistently great experience.

Ship tip

Although the longer cruise to Alaska and the departure port are attractive, I would choose a different ship than this one. It's really a subpar experience.

We were on the Grand in May on the 10 day Alaskan cruise. We had no issues at all. In case you didn't know the porters are employees of the port not the cruise line.

That’s a shame you had so a horrible time. We went on Grand Princess in 2015 out of Vancouver to Alaska and had an awesome time. Everything that trip was top notch (especially the staff). The shows on our trip were awesome. The comedy show was my favorite. It was clean jokes and had the entire audience rolling in laughter. I especially like how the staff interacted with the guest during various performances. Again, sorry you had a bad time. I hope it was just a fluke.
