Review summary

We recommend this itinerary and Freedom of the Seas. It is especially great for families cruising with children. We found it a wonderful time of celebrating our anniversary and a good value.

Embarkation

Even with the chaos of so many arriving at once, RC was organized and took care of business, getting us on the ship without any delay.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We are a couple on either side of 70, active, healthy and enjoy adventure. Our 4 star reflects more of our generation than any fault with the cruise. Coming from California we are used to great food. In the dining room, the quality came close to expectations though we were disappointed in limited selection. The Windjammer Cafe is a great alternative for buffet selections...almost whatever you might desire. We never had trouble finding a free table. The cruise staff was wonderful, friendly, helpful and meeting needs/request without delay. There was a lot of activity for every interest. We found the entertainment to be enjoyable but limited in the showrooms. Again, perhaps our generation. Our 4 star rating relates mainly to the vibe of the ship being geared to a younger generation and families with young children. This is a great family cruise. Even for teens. Lots of activities--teen have their own section of the ship. But...there was no adult only peaceful areas.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Pools were very crowded so we avoided them, opting for swimming off the ship. We enjoyed the ice show and the 2 main musical shows. The rest of the entertainment was sub-par in our estimation. We enjoyed coffee and Ben & Jerry's in the Promenade and the peacefulness (usually) of the Viking Crown Lounge.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship is spectacular, constantly being cleaned on the interior. Furnishing were top notch. It was easy to find our way. Interactive screens at every landing offering directions and things to do suggestions. We did notice that the ship is aging as we are. Balcony glass is etched, staterooms, tho well appointed and clean, showed signs of needing to be renovated.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were very surprised by the amount of space and the organization of the environment. Very happy with our cabin.

Ship tip

Best place to be as the ship leaves is the bow. Go out on deck 4 outside. Walk forward to the stairs tucked next the the wall. Climb to the bow deck. Shh...don't let too many people know and you'll have few blocking your view.

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

We visited Old San Juan on our own after the cruise. The fort is a must-see.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

We intentionally did not plan much. It was a great experience to take the water taxi to the town and walk along Front Street. We enjoy sitting outside at a restaurant bar, have a glass of wine and chicken wings. Lovely experience. However, from former visits, there are some great beaches on this island.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

We visited a plantation and Brimstone Hill, the old British fort. Great day, good excursion.

St. John's, Antigua

Loved this little town. We chose a walking tour because it was our second day and we were adjusting to the cruise. We learned that the descriptions on RC's website are not as accurate as we'd like. We were told we would have individual whisper headsets to hear the guide. No big deal, however. We understood and heard perfectly. Loved the tour

Castries, St. Lucia

We took a catamaran sail up the coast the the Pitons because the snorkeling excursion we desired would not let me (a tad over 70) participate. (I like to race the owner to the shore :). We had a wonderful time, took a lot of photos, met some great people, enjoyed a refreshing swim and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Again, however, the website was wrong. They did include drinks, but no snacks. Oh well...great time anyway.

Bridgetown, Barbados

5 out of 5
We took an excursion to swim with turtles, snorkel over a shipwreck (actually a couple of small boats sunk intentionally near the shore) and were given time on a beach. Thoroughly loved the experience. Great crew who made everything work well.

Disembarkation

Very smooth. Well organized. We Uber'd back to the airport to pick up a rental car and continue our adventure.
