Review summary

Overall very good. Food in dining room as good as Holland America or Norwegian. This was our first cruise during a holiday period and ship was stretched to its limit.

Embarkation

Went very smoothly

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food in main dining room was quite good for dinner; service excellent. But breakfast in dining room slow. Lunch at the buffet ample but not very imaginative. While entrees varied, salad bar, for example, about same every day. This was a crowded, holiday cruise with lots of families. RC should have added some extra crew to handle it. Staff couldn't clear tables in buffet quickly enough for the large crowd.

Main Dining Rooms (Galileo, Isaac & Leonardo)

3 out of 5

"My time dining" really wasn't. Almost impossible to get a reservation for 7 or 7:30. Had to wait till 8. They really were doing two seatings despite claim of open dining. Maybe because it was a very crowded cruise but that was a minus for us.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Adults only pool a big plus; fairly quiet. Grandchildren did rock climbing,

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Disappointing. Singer/dancers were energetic and their shows elaborate. A juggler one night who had to supplement his act with videos; this show was lame. Beatles show very good and comedian quite funny. Should have been a magician since there were so many kids on this cruise. Also, it was very hard to find out the times of the shows more than a day ahead, which made planning a dinner reservation tricky.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Only quibble about layout. If one wanted a slice of pizza (free), had to go down to deck 5. Should have been something on deck 11 (pool area). While ship was clean there were several toilets out of service the entire cruise. With an over-capacity crowd, those should have been fixed immediately. Further, there was an announcement (repeatedly) that there was some Norovirus on board. Considering that, I did not see crew wiping down hand-rails, banisters, elevators regularly as I have seen on other cruises.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Roomy for two. Nice amount of storage space. Bathroom shower tiny.

Ship tip

Unless you are going with family, avoid holiday periods. See above comment on My Time dining. Couples: grab some seats around the adult pool-there's sun and shade.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

3 out of 5
Spent two nights before cruise at a Dania Beach motel. There are some good restaurants around, but not much to walk to. Need a cab or uber. Jackson's has good food and great ice cream sundaes (expensive, share).

George Town, Grand Cayman

3 out of 5
The usual jewelry, t-shirt, and similar shops. Nothing very interesting at the port.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

3 out of 5
It's just a self-contained zone right at the pier. There's a pool, bars, a pool to "swim with the dolphins" and shops.

Cozumel, Mexico

4 out of 5
Took teen-age grandchildren on excursion to the Mayan ruin on Cozumel. While it's not one of big sites, it was very interesting. More extensive than I thought and kids liked it. Stopped to see a demonstration of how chocolate is grown and processed. It was also only about half day. Other tours, to sites on the mainland, were all day.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Extremely smooth
