Review summary

Overall, this cruise was very good. Princess does a lot of things very well and we enjoyed the ship and Alaska. Since Discovery Princess is new, we felt that the staff was still learning the ship and their responsibilities, and this showed up most noticeably in the main dining rooms. However, the service in the buffet was excellent. This was our second Princess cruise, and we would absolutely take another Princess cruise.

Embarkation

We arrived early and were on the ship in less than 1 hour. We had all our paperwork in order, and needed a print copy of our covid test results which I had since the Princess App had not been updated.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Main dining rooms were generally good - some dinners were excellent and some were just okay. Service was average. We really liked Gigi's pizza and ate there twice. The buffets were very good, but only ate breakfast and lunch there.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We enjoyed bingo and line dancing. It was too cold for me to use the pool.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We really liked Spotlight Bar show the best. Rock Opera was also well done.

Children's Programs

We did not travel with children.

Service and Staff

Service in the main dining room was often slow. Our room steward did a good job, but when my husband pointed out that a light was not working on the sofa, it was never fixed.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The Discovery Princess is a beautiful ship and was immaculate the entire voyage.

Cabin / Stateroom

Beautiful mini suite, very comfortable and I really appreciated the larger bathroom and balcony. The cabin was immaculate.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

We arrived in Seattle the day before our cruise. We enjoyed exploring on our own and found a nice Mexican restaurant for dinner. We did not do an excursion in Seattle.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan was lovely. We did the Lumberjack Show excursion. We enjoyed exploring and shopping there on our own. We also had beautiful weather and enjoyed doing some hiking to see the salmon.

CRUISE ENDICOTT ARM & DAWES GLACIER

Awesome. Well worth getting up early for. One of my favorite parts of the cruise.

Juneau, Alaska

We really liked our time in Juneau. I did a Whale Watching Excursion which was fabulous. I highly recommend - we saw lots of whales and had a wonderful guide. My husband did the Mendenhall Glacier Hike and really enjoyed it also.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

This was a substitute port for Skagway which we were not able to dock at. It was nice, but there was not a lot to do there. We went up the mountain on the cable car and did some browsing through the shops. I was disappointed that our substitute port was not Sitka, if we could not go to Skagway.

Victoria, British Columbia

4 out of 5
Victoria is a lovely city, but we got there too late (7:00 PM) to see much in the daylight. We did a horse trolley excursion through the downtown and residential areas of Victoria. The guide was excellent. We had time after our carriage ride to go back into town but it was too cold and dark. This port visit would be much better if the ship arrived a few hours earlier for more daylight.

Disembarkation

Very easy and fast. We took a Lyft car to Seattle Tacoma airport. We had our luggage sent to Seattle Tacoma through Port Valet so we didnt have to carry heavy luggage with us. Our bags were picked up on time at our home airport.
