Review summary

Wonderful ports, friendly crew, older traditional ship design (like the Grand, Ruby and Emerald) with a real Promenade deck you can walk around the ship on. This was our first time in Sitka. Loved the Russian historical influence and the delightful walk through town to the Totem Pole Park. The view of nearby Edgecomb Volcano was dramatic. Wings Otter seaplane flight from Juneau over 5 glaciers was spectacular. Been wanting to do it for years. Glad we did, finally. So glad to have a full day in Victoria BC as our last port before arriving back in SF. Often the Victoria stop is too late or too short for a proper exploration. Not so this time.

Embarkation

Very slick, because we had our medallions mailed to our home. This expedites boarding.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Dined every evening at Michelangelo DR—same time, same table, same wait staff and tablemates—and were very happy with this arrangement. We sailed on the same ship, Crown Princess, to Hawaii last December and noticed a distinct improvement in main dining room food quality this time. There reportedly is a new chef and it’s apparent. Buffet seating area has been refurbished nicely with a more contemporary decor, which we appreciated. But the Buffet layout and food variety are inferior to what we’ve experienced on newer ships such as Regal, Royal and Sky.

Cabin / Stateroom

Smaller, forward Ocean View cabin on Plaza Deck (deck 5). We like this location because of the convenient access to the Piazza, Princess Theater and the Michelangelo DR. Often, no need to take the elevator from here, depending on where you’re headed. YAY!

Ship tip

If you tried the Crown last year and were disappointed, give it another chance. It’s better now—especially the dining room fare.
